In a new video, a UFO seems to approach Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano, then slows down, turns and deliberately enters the smoldering volcano crater.

The video, recorded on May 30 at around 8:30 p.m., is the latest in a series of alleged UFO events that have taken place near the central Mexico active volcano since late 2012.

Mexico's media company, Televisa, monitors any daily activity around the volcano, which is about 40 miles south of Mexico City. Last November, video images showedwhat appeared to be a brightly lit, cigar-shaped object plunging into the top of Popocatepetl.

At the time, Marc Dantonio -- chief photo and video analyst of the Mutual UFO Network -- suggested the object was "a meteor captured on successive video frames."

HuffPost asked Dantonio, who creates special effects and is contracted by the U.S. Navy, Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, to weigh in on this latest video.

"What I think is that this is not a likely fake. I think, for the moment, this is a genuine image capture," he told HuffPost in an email.

"This is a low light camera (which) allows the vulcanologists studying the footage to see any incandescence on the flank of the volcano in night shots. As such, any brighter lights that are captured will appear very bright, as the one planet/star indicates."

Dantonio points out that the camera created a time lapse video of still shots put together.

"When played back at normal video speeds, the object is made to appear to be moving very fast, but, in fact, it is moving at aircraft speeds if you play it at the proper frame rate for the capture."

While he admits the time lapse effect prevents confirmation that the object had wingtip strobes, which would help prove the terrestrial aircraft argument, Dantonio asserts that the flying object "is turning at a rate consistent with aircraft, but the case that it is descending is not at all made. In this case, the object is moving from right to left and appears to be descending, but it is exactly this behavior you see if an aircraft at altitude is heading away from you -- this is the consequence of perspective and round Earth."

While the jury is still out on this most recent video, Dantonio isn't buying that we're seeing an alien craft headed for a hot volcanic bath.

"I am leaning toward the object being a captured commercial jet passing through the field of view. Several elements of this video are initially startling, firstly that the object appears to be moving fast, and secondly, that it appears to be descending into the volcano.

"Because this is a time lapse video, however, the speed is an illusion, and the flight path of the object and the descending appearance are likely an illusion of perspective, as well."

IT'S A DREAM JOB: Mark Rosenthal, who pulls in $156,000 a year as head of Local 983 of District Council 37, nods off at his desk during one of a series of postlunch naps that have outraged members of the union’s executive board.

Union fat cat Mark Rosenthal spends more time sleeping at his desk than organizing labor, a series of damning photos reveals.

The 400-pound president of Local 983 of District Council 37 — the city’s largest blue-collar municipal-workers union — often downs a huge meal, then drops into dreamland in the early afternoon, members of the union’s executive board told The Post.

“He eats lunch when he arrives at work at 2 p.m. Then, like clockwork, he goes to sleep with a cup of soda on the table and the straw in it,” said Marvin Robbins, a union vice president.

“Then he wakes up, looks at his watch and says, ‘I have to get out before the traffic gets bad.’ He’s usually out by 4 p.m. after being at the office two hours.”

Rosenthal is a former Parks Department employee who rose to power campaigning to rid the union of corruption in the late 1990s.

He last made embarrassing headlines in 2009, when he inspired a City Council bill requiring jumbo-size ambulances for morbidly obese patients after he had a stroke at City Hall.

Since then, he hasn’t been making much of an effort to give the city’s ambulances a break and slim down. Union officials say he racks up $1,400 in monthly food bills on the union dime.

Much of the 5-foot-7, 400-plus-pound Rosenthal’s food tabs are for catered union events and meals he writes off as “union business,” board members claim.

They say he significantly overorders at eateries like Dallas BBQ, the Stage Door Deli and Pine Restaurant in The Bronx, a hangout for local politicians, and takes the extra food back to his Bronxdale apartment.

“He’s always walking off with a doggie bag or extra boxes of food,” said another executive board member.

Rosenthal, who earns $156,000 annually, yesterday denied being a free spender— and insisted he works “12-to-14-hour days.”

He says the allegations are “part of a smear campaign” by a faction trying to get another Local 983 vice president, Joseph Puleo, elected president in a June 5 showdown.

He said it’s normal for executives to take “power naps.”

He also blamed his meetings with the sandman on the effects of pain medication he takes for backaches he has suffered since he fell through a chair at a McDonald’s last year.

“The chair broke because I’m big,” Rosenthal said.

“I’m 60 years old, so if I eat during my lunch hour and take a little medication, can’t I close my eyes?” he said outside his apartment complex. “Is it so outrageous?”

Rosenthal is also under fire from the union’s executive board for allowing lawyer Arthur Schwartz to allegedly rack up an average of $12,000 a month in union legal fees for years despite being on a $5,500 monthly retainer, board members said.

But Schwartz claims he has submitted only one monthly bill over $10,000 in 15 years representing the union and averages about $7,000 per month in fees.

APRIL 2, 2013

The executive board on May 15 voted to fire Schwartz anyway — and also to pull Rosenthal’s union car.

Board members said they were furious enough to fire Schwartz because he pursued a lawsuit on Rosenthal’s behalf aimed at changing the makeup of the union’s election committee after it nominated Puleo as a candidate for president on May 7.

Rosenthal responded to Schwartz’s firing by filing another suit days later in Manhattan Supreme Court, claiming the May 15 meeting occurred without his approval.

The suit also accuses executive board members of using union resources to sway the election in Puleo’s favor.

“Mr. Puleo and his cohorts have basically seized control without having won the election,” the suit says.

“Not only that, [but] they have [also] assigned legal work to attorneys, including to Mr. Puleo’s campaign lawyer.”

Almost every Treasury in the world has introduced cheap nickel plated coins and alloys to cut costs without any consideration given to the potential health effects from allergies, eczema and skin disease related to nickel exposure such as contact dermatitis. Initial tests showed the coins didn't release enough nickel to trigger allergies, but experts say previous tests were flawed, exposing public to high levels.

There are approximately 30 elements used for coins, however according to a global investigation of coin composition and nickel and cobalt release in Contact Dermatitis, a worldwide selection of countries with circulating coins releasing toxic metals covers 75% of the world population and the majority of the people live in countries where coins release nickel.

An Austrian dermatologist warned that despite assurances of 'hypo-allergenic' Euro coins, theycontain enough nickel to cause contact dermatitis.

EU (European Union) technical documents claim that the quality of the alloy in the Euros "overcomes the risk of allergy". But studies of the new coins indicate that they release as much nickel as conventional currencies.

Governments should be discouraged from using "weasel words," agrees Richard Rycroft of the St John's Institute for Dermatology in London. "The term 'hypo-allergenic' is misleading, if not meaningless," unless it is backed up by scientific data, he says.

Recently Doctors have issued allergy warnings over the coins introduced in January last year after tests revealed they release four times more nickel on to the skin than expected.

The authors say the problem is a ‘public health concern’ and Britons are ‘being unnecessarily exposed to high levels of nickel on the skin’.

The number of people with a nickel allergy has soared in recent years with around one in five women and one in ten in the general population affected.

The problem has become so great that Europe recently introduced strict new rules on how much nickel can be used in personal items worn next to the skin such as watch straps, earrings and necklaces. Previous studies have shown that cobalt ions are genotoxic, which could potentially damage DNA and lead to further long-term medical complications.

Research shows that people with specific allergies who handle coins frequently could suffer a reaction because the friction leads to higher exposure than in laboratory conditions.

Researchers from the St John’s Institute of Dermatology at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden say the risk will escalate dramatically as more nickel coins are phased in during the coming months.

The new coins have been banned by Swedish authorities because they ‘pose unacceptable risks to health’.

The new coins were introduced in January last year in a bid to save up to millions. Previously the so-called ‘silver’ coins were made from a metal known as cupronickel, an alloy made of more than 70 percent copper and 25 percent nickel.

But the new slightly thicker coins made from steel with a nickel coating are cheaper to make.

At the time of the switchover, doctors warned that a proper health assessment had not been carried out over the allergy risk for the general public and for those who handle coins regularly such as cashiers.

The Mint responded by asking three laboratories to carry out an assessment using a standard EU test which measures the amount of nickel released if a coin is left submerged in artificial sweat.

They found no increase in nickel released from the new coins compared to the old.

But this approach is flawed, says a report in the medical journal Contact Dermatitis.

When handling money, the nickel is usually released by the friction of picking it up and holding it.

They developed a new test which can measure nickel released from coins being handled.

The test on six volunteers who were nickel-sensitive found that after handling coins for an hour, they were exposed to four times more nickel than with the old coins.

The study concludes: ‘Our study clearly shows that the nickel-plated steel coins recently introduced in the United Kingdom pose an increased allergy and eczema risk to the general public and cashiers as compared with the cupro-nickel coins that are being replaced.

‘It is of utmost importance that consumers, general practitioners, dermatologists and industrial physicians understand that brief and repeated contact with coins and other items may cause significant nickel exposure and result in nickel allergy and dermatitis on the hands.’

Skin specialists claim there are potential health costs of the new coins from skin disease such as rashes from allergic contact dermatitis and hand dermatitis. The United States, Canada, and Australia all use similar formulas within their lowest denomination coins including the nickels, dimes and quarters.

Here are tips to avoid a nickel allergy:

Avoid contact with all nickels, dimes and quarters.

If you have your ears or other body parts pierced, have it done with a stainless steel. Make sure your jewelry is made of stainless steel or either 18- or 24-karat gold.

Buy clothes with buttons, snaps, rivets, or fasteners that are made of plastic or are plastic-coated or painted metal. If your clothes have nickel items, switch to plastic or plastic coated.

Look for jewelry that is hypoallergenic -- made of stainless steel, at least 14-karat gold, pure sterling silver, or polycarbonate plastic. If you must wear earrings that contain nickel, add plastic covers made specifically for earring studs. Buy eyeglass frames that are nickel-free.

If a good piece of jewelry that you wear daily -- such as a wedding ring -- causes a reaction, ask a jeweler about having it plated in a less allergic metal, such as platinum.

If you are extremely sensitive to nickel, you may also need to avoid nickel-rich foods such as fish and chocolate.

An unnamed man was rescued from a toilet in Claremont, Cape Town, last week. The man had somehow got himself stuck in the bowl of a toilet in a portable loo on a building site. So stuck, in fact, only his legs, arms and head were sticking out!

According to Baydu Adams, a Cape Town blogger who witnessed the bizarre situation unfold, passers-by heard a panicked shouting coming from inside the toilet.

Upon finding the man, it took about 40 minutes for security, police and some helpful onlookers to find a way to rescue him.

“The funny part was that while two or three people were trying to help, others were taking pictures and videos,” says Baydu.

Eventually, police managed to yank the man out using refuse bags. “And out came a half-naked guy using his T-shirt to cover his privates!” says Baydu. “You can only imagine what this guy was covered in.”

Baydu says some of the gathering crowd commented that the man’s eyes were red and he looked high. He couldn’t have been homeless, Baydu adds, because he had an iPhone or iPod with him.

“Heaven knows how he got into that position and why.”

A man in China's southeastern Guangdong province admitted himself to a local hospital after he reportedly got a live eel stuck inside him. According to British tabloid The Sun, the man inserted the 20-inch-long Asian swamp eel into his anus after seeing it done in a porn movie, and he had to endure all-night surgery to have it extracted.

According to a HuffPost translation of a blogger's post on Chinese message board forum Mop.com, the eel reportedly chewed through the man's colon, perforating his large intestine, and became stuck in his body cavity. A graphic X-ray image (seen below) shows how far inside the eel was when the man came in for treatment.

Medical team members reportedly said the eel, which was “simply trying to find its way out," was alive when removed but died shortly thereafter. According to The Sun, the man is still recovering at the hospital and might face animal cruelty charges.

The Asian swamp eel -- also known as the rice eel or rice paddy eel -- is a snake-shaped fish that is commonly sold live at food markets in East Asian countries.

Although this type of eel is known as an invasive species in parts of the United States, this isn't the first time that it's made its way into (ahem) foreign habitats.

In 2012, a New Zealand man had to have an eel removed from his posterior. In 2010, a Chinese man died after his friends allegedly inserted an eel into his rectum as a joke.

China And The Biggest Territory Grab Since World War II

The New York Times reported that China’s mapping authority, Sinomaps Press, issued a new map of the country showing 80% of the South China Sea as internal Chinese water.

What’s at issue? Each year, more than half of the world’s annual merchant tonnage passes through the South China Sea as well as a third of the global trade in crude oil and over half of LNG trade.

Beijing’s assertion of sovereignty over that body of water does not necessarily mean it will close the South China Sea off to international commerce. Yet that would be the next step. Given its extremely broad view of its right to regulate coastal traffic, Beijing will undoubtedly define the concept of “innocent passage” narrowly and require vessels entering that sea to obtain its permission beforehand and similarly require aircraft flying over it to do the same. The South China Sea, bordered by eight nations, has long been considered international water.

The New York Times noted Asian diplomats have seen the map with the stunning claim. Its release, the Times article states, was delayed from late 2012 “so that it could be formally authorized by the Chinese senior leadership.” The map is not yet publicly available.

Chiang Kai-shek’s Republic of China in 1947 issued maps with dashes at the edge of the South China Sea. The ambiguous markings led to the term “cow’s tongue” because of the shape of the area defined by the dashes. Mao Zedong’s victorious People’s Republic in 1949 adopted as its own Chiang’s expansive South China Sea claims.

Hopeful analysts had long maintained that the dashes—nine or ten of them depending on the map—signified China’s claim to only the islands inside the cow’s tongue. Those islands are subject to competing claims by other shoreline nations, specifically, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Moreover, there was great optimism when China ratified the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea in June 1996. That multilateral treaty includes detailed rules on the calculation of territorial waters—generally limiting territorial claims to waters no further than 12 nautical miles from shore—and those rules were inconsistent with Beijing’s general assertion of sovereignty over the South China Sea. Accordingly, analysts naturally thought—hoped, actually—that China had abandoned its expansive 1947-based claim.

Yet Beijing, despite treaty obligations, had long been laying the groundwork to close off the South China Sea to other nations. For instance, in August 2011 the official Xinhua News Agency issued a report stating China had “three million square kilometers of territorial waters.” It was impossible for the country to get to that figure without including its claim to most of the 2.6 million square kilometers of the South China Sea.

Moreover, in that same month Xinhua was even clearer when it asserted that the islands in the South China Sea “and surrounding waters” were “part of China’s core interests.” By using “core interests,” Beijing was signaling it could never compromise China’s sovereignty over either the islands or those waters.

In any event, Beijing’s new map, according to those who have seen it, removes any ambiguity by converting the dashes into a national boundary. All islands and waters inside the line, therefore, are China’s, at least according to the Chinese. It is the biggest attempted grab of territory since World War II.

The new map will roil Asian nations, of course. Last year, Beijing used force to seize Philippine territory, Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The United States, despite its treaty obligations to defend the Philippines, let the Chinese take what they wanted. Nobody in the White House wanted to confront China, and there were voices in the Pentagon saying that China’s aggression served the Philippines right for kicking American forces out of the Clark and Subic bases. Now, the Chinese are going after Ayungin Shoal, long considered Philippine territory.

The ongoing seizure of pieces of the Philippines is an indirect challenge to America. Now, however, the issuance of the new map means Beijing has taken on Washington directly. If there has been any consistent American foreign policy over the course of two centuries, it has been the defense of freedom of navigation.

Why is this important? The world has prospered because of trade conducted freely over wide seas lanes and air routes. So China’s claim to the South China Sea, if permitted to stand, will mark the end of the open architecture of the Post-War world.

At the end of this week, President Obama will meet his Chinese counterpart,Xi Jinping, in Rancho Mirage for two days of intensive talks. The White House, in announcing the meeting on May 20, said it wanted to “discuss ways to enhance cooperation.” The administration is hoping to build an enduring partnership with China’s increasingly militant one-party state and is trying to avoid disagreement.

Yet on the Beijing’s sea claims there can be no compromise. Either the South China Sea is Chinese or it is international water. The stakes—for China, for the United States, for the international community—are hard to overstate.

Chinese Vendors Selling Live Fish and Turtles in Plastic Bags as Keychains

Chinese vendors have been selling pretty depressing keychains that consist of either a Brazil turtle or two small kingfish sealed inside a small plastic baggy. Each baggy, seven centimeters in length, is filled with colored liquid and the imprisoned animal(s) of choice.

The vendors, who sell the baggies at the entrances to subways or train stations, claim the colored water is a “nutrient rich” solution that allows the live creatures shoved inside a seven centimeter bag to live for a few months, after which–if this story couldn’t get any more depressing–the animals die and, according to Helablog, “rumor has it…the cadavers are heated in the microwave for 15 seconds and eaten while enjoying an ice cold beer.”

If the existence of these keychains wasn’t depressing enough, the fact that they’re not illegal makes them even worse, as China only has a Wild Animal Protection Law, under which these keychains do not happen to fall.

Since there is no law preventing the existence of these keychains, so there may not be an end to them anytime soon and, according to the Global Times, the depressing keychain business is doing well, as they reportedly watched one fish keychain and nine turtle keychains sell in five minutes time, to both people who think they’re neat, and others who buy the keychains to free the animals.

According to the cofounder of the International Center for Veterinary Services, Mary Peng, the fish and turtles wouldn’t survive too long in the sealed plastic bag due to the lack of oxygen, regardless of how “nutrient rich” the colored water may be.

Animal protection groups are voicing their opinion on the matter, so hopefully they can quickly make progress toward getting these keychains made illegal.

The Curse of Macbeth

As success or failure in the theater can be influenced by so many intangible and unpredictable factors, it's not surprising that actors and other theater types maintain a variety of long-standing superstitions, which often are taken very seriously. (The most famous is the insistence on saying "break a leg" rather than "good luck.")

Two such superstitions float around Macbeth. The first is that it's bad luck to even say “Macbeth” except during rehearsal or performance. When referring to the work one instead uses circumlocutions, such as “the Scottish play” or “Mackers” or “the Scottish business” or “the Glamis comedy” or just “that play." Some say this rule applies only when inside a theater; it’s OK, therefore, to use the dread name in other settings – like classrooms, for instance.

The remedy, if someone does happen to utter the unutterable, is to leave the room, close the door, turn around three times, say a dirty word (or spit, some say), then knock on the door and ask to be let back in. If you can’t do all that, you simply quote from Hamlet, act 1, scene 4: “Angels and ministers of grace defend us!”

The second superstition is that the play itself brings ill luck to cast and crew, and many productions of Macbeth have, in fact, encountered unfortunate circumstances. The supposed origin story for this is that Shakespeare used “authentic” witches’ chants in the play; as punishment, real witches cast a curse on the play, condemning it for all time.

If legends are to be believed, bad fortune for productions of Macbeth seems to have started fairly early on: one story, is that King James I banned the play for about five years after he first saw it, in 1606. Some say he found the witches’ curses too realistic – having authored a work on demonology, he considered himself an expert.

Among the incidents cited as examples of the curse at work:

• In the first production of Macbeth, on August 7, 1606, Hal Berridge, the boy playing Lady Macbeth, became feverish and died backstage. This story is likely mythical, and further tradition says that Shakespeare had to take over the part. (One version holds that Shakespeare played the role badly, and later chewed out his fellow actors for mentioning “that play,” thus beginning the tradition of not referring to it by name.)

• In a 1672 production in Amsterdam, the actor playing Macbeth substituted a real dagger for the blunted stage dagger and killed the actor playing Duncan, in full view of the audience.

• On the opening day of a London run in 1703, England was hit with one of the most violent storms in its history.

• At a 1721 performance a nobleman in the audience got up in the middle of a scene and walked across the stage to talk with a friend. The actors chased him from the premises; he returned with militiamen, who burned the theater down.

• Female Lady Macbeths haven't been immune. In 1775, Sarah Siddons was nearly attacked by a disapproving audience. In 1926, Sybil Thorndike was almost strangled by a fellow actor. And in 1948, Diana Wynyard decided to play the sleepwalking scene with her eyes closed and sleepwalked right off the stage, falling 15 feet. In the best show-must-go-on tradition, she finished the performance.

• In the mid-1800s, two rival actors (William Charles Macready of England and Edwin Forrest of the U.S.) staged competing productions, so that on May 10, 1849, they were both playing Macbeth in New York. An audience of Forrest fans threw fruit and chairs at Macready during his performance at the Astor Place Opera House, disrupting the show and starting a riot. The militia was called in and fired on the crowd; more than 20 died and another 30-plus were wounded.

• On April 9, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was reading passages from Macbeth – those following Duncan's assassination – aloud to some friends. Within a week Lincoln was himself assassinated.

• During the first modern-dress production, at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1928, a large set collapsed, seriously injuring some cast members.

• In a 1937 production a heavy counterweight crashed to the stage, missing Laurence Olivier, playing Macbeth, by only inches.

• In a 1942 staging, with John Gielgud as Macbeth, three actors (two witches and Duncan) died and the set designer committed suicide.

• In a Thursday-night performance in 1947 actor Harold Norman was stabbed during the final sword fight in act 5 and died of his wounds. On Thursdays his ghost is now said to haunt the Coliseum Theatre in Oldham, where the fatal scene was played.

• In a 1953 outdoor production in Bermuda, during the realistically staged attack on Macbeth's castle, a gust of wind blew smoke and flames into the audience, who fled. Charlton Heston, playing Macbeth, suffered severe burns on his groin and leg because his tights had accidentally been soaked in kerosene.

• Rip Torn's 1970 production in New York City was halted by an actors’ strike.

• David Leary’s 1971 run was plagued with two fires and seven robberies.

• In 1971 Roman Polanski (who may himself have seemed cursed at the time, as his wife Sharon Tate had been murdered by followers of Charles Manson just two years earlier) made a film version; a camera operator was almost killed in an accident on the first day of shooting.

• J. Kenneth Campbell, playing Macduff, was mugged soon after the play's opening in 1981 at Lincoln Center.

• In a 2001 production by the Cambridge Shakespeare Company, Macduff injured his back, Lady Macbeth bumped her head, Ross broke a toe, and two cedar trees from Birnam Wood topped over, destroying the set.

There are several explanations for why Macbeth seems so accident-prone. During much of the play lighting is low – the bulk of the scenes take place at night or in the dark or fog – thus increasing opportunities for accidents. There are several fight scenes, more than in most plays; in a long run, it's almost inevitable something will go amiss. Macbeth is also Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, and thus somewhat cheaper to put on; one theory suggests that when finances get tight, companies will slap together a production of Macbeth, and during the general cutting of corners safety gets compromised.

But more than anything, the whole curse business benefits from a self-fulfilling circularity. Every play production involves some things going wrong – considering all the people, costumes, scenery, and equipment involved, there are bound to be problems. And if a play is popular enough to get staged and restaged for 400 years or so, some of those problems are bound to be pretty serious on occasion. If we could compile a list of accidents and near accidents for performances of, say, Hamlet, would it be equally long and dramatic? Almost certainly. But no one remembers or records these accidents, because there’s no curse on Hamlet.

When accidents happen around Macbeth, though, the superstitious nod wisely and mutter about the curse. The play itself is soaked in blood, violence, and disorder – it's got gory ghosts, deceit, manipulation, assassination, malevolence, brutal murders of children, etc – and so provides fertile ground for dark musings. When cast and crew are expecting accidents, watching for them, any mishaps are uniquely bound to remembered. Every old actor has his or her own Macbeth story that gets reverently passed on to the younger ones. And so the curse persists, feeding upon its own reputation.

Mark Of The Beast? The Hi-Tech Tattoo That Could Replace All Your Passwords

Motorola has announced it is looking at alternatives to traditional passwords in a bid to make logging into online sites, or accessing mobile phones, more secure. Among the ideas discussed at the D11 conference in California on Wednesday were electronic tattoos and authentication pills that people swallow.

The tattoos, developed by Massachusetts-based engineering firm MC10, contain flexible electronic circuits that are attached to the wearer's skin using a rubber stamp. Motorola's senior vice president of advance research, Regina Dugan, shows off an electronic tattoo at the D11 conference in California.

The tattoos, designed by Massachusetts-based firm MC10, are made from silicon and contain electronic circuits that bend and move with the wearer's body. The tattoos, called Biostamps, were designed for medical purposes to track a patient's health, but Motorola thinks the technology can be used for authentication purposes, as an alternative to traditional passwords

This image shows the various parts that make up the MC10 electronic tattoo called the Biostamp. It can be stuck to the body using a rubber stamp, and protected using spray-on bandages. The circuit can be worn for two weeks and Motorola believes this makes it perfect for authentication purposes.

MC10 originally designed the tattoos, called Biostamps, to help medical teams measure the health of their patients either remotely, or without the need for large expensive machinery. Motorola claims that the circuits, which also contain antennae and built-in sensors, could be adapted to work with mobile phones and tablets.

The mobile devices could then be used to confirm the owner's identity and log them in to accounts automatically. This would prevent thieves and other people from being able to access a phone, or individual apps on the device, if it is stolen or lost.

Another idea presented during the keynote talk at the Wall Street Journal conference with head of Motorola Dennis Woodside and senior vice president for advanced technology and products, Regina Dugan, was a swallowable pill. The Proteus Digital Health pill has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and was given European regulatory approval in 2010.

Another password-alternative presented by Motorola at the Wall Street Journal's D11 conference was the 'vitamin authentication pill'. It contains a computer chip that creates an 18-bit signal when swallowed. Motorola is testing whether this signal can 'talk' to mobile phones and be used to authenticate a wearer's identity.

It contains a computer chip that can be powered like a battery using the acid in the wearer's stomach. Once swallowed the 'vitamin authentication pill' creates an 18-bit ECG-like signal inside the wearer's body that can be picked up by mobile devices and authentication hardware outside. This could be used verify the wearer is the correct owner of the device or account.

Dugan continued that the pill could be taken every day for 30 days, if necessary, without any problems.
Woodside added Motorola would not be shipping these 'right away' but they have 'tested it authenticating a phone, and it works.' He continued: 'Having the boldness to think differently about problems that everybody has every day is really important for Motorola now.'

Dugan, who used to be head of the US Pentagon's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, explained that each signal emitted by the pill could be unique to each user. Both these ideas move away from traditional passwords and towards technology that turns the user into a physical authentication token.

Explaining the reasons behind the plans, Dugan said: 'Authentication is irritating. In fact its so irritating only about half the people do it. 'Despite the fact there is a lot of information about you on your smartphone, which makes you far more prone to identity theft.

'After 40 years of advances in computation, we're still authenticating the same way we did years ago - passwords.

The so-called 'vitamin authentication pill' has been designed by Proteus Digital Health in California. It was passed by the FDA in 2012 after gaining European regulatory approval in 2010. The chip can be swallowed and used to monitor the wearer's health and Motorola thinks it could be used for authentication

'In fact it's worse, the average users does it 39 times a day and it takes them 2.3 seconds every time they do it. 'Power users will do it up to 100 times a day.

'So what are we doing about it? Well [Motorola] is thinking of a whole variety of options for how to do better at authentication such as near-term things including tokens or fobs that have NFC or bluetooth.
'But you can also think about a means of authentication you can wear on your skin every day, say an electronic tattoo or a vitamin pill'.

During the talk, Woodside also unveiled Motorola's plans to launch a new handset. Motorola was bought by Google 2011, which owns the Android operating system.The new phone, called the Moto X, will be built in Texas and Woodside said he was 'pretty confident in the products we're going to be shipping in the fall'.

Woodside added that the Moto X would benefit from Motorola's expertise in managing ultra-low power sensors -- such as in accelerometers and gyroscopes -- that can sense usage contexts and turn off certain components when not required, to save power.

He added that it will interact in different ways to other handsets and said the camera would 'fire up in a way not seen before' calling the handset 'more contextually aware' than other phones. Motorola's engineers have also come up with processors that will help save power, but didn't elaborate further.

Protests spread across Turkey on Saturday as tens of thousands of demonstrators headed to the streets during the second day of civil unrest in the country. The protests began on what is now being called “Bloody Friday” over plans to destroy Gezi Park, known as the only green space left in central Istanbul. It started as a peaceful protest, with demonstrators setting up tents, singing, and reading books to at the park to keep out bulldozers. Police soon began to fire tear gas grenades, water cannons, and rubber bullets into the crowd or peaceful protesters. Protesters claim the Turkish government is using chemical weapons against them. There have been numerous reports that the Turkish government is using Agent Orange, a chemical banned by the U.N. against the protesters.

The peaceful protests have turned into a face-off between police and demonstrators, with clashes throughout the night on Friday, and continuing through all of Saturday and into Sunday. Riot police have been accused of “heavy-handed tactics” as crowds of protesters chanted, "shoulder to shoulder against fascism" and "government resign". Those who would not take to the streets stood in front of their windows banging pots and pans, shouting support. Others held up cans of beer in defiance of the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), which passed a recent law restricting the sale and advertising of alcohol. Protesters claimed that the government in Turkey is increasingly authoritarian and trying to pull the country into the conflict in neighboring Syria.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, AKP’s vice president of foreign affairs, stated that the protest turned violent, but admitted that the police used excessive force. "It is true police used excessive force and this is not acceptable," he said. "We cannot accept this because we have been trying to democratize this country."

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the current Prime Minister of Turkey, also admitted that there have been cases of “extreme” police action. "I call on the protesters to stop their demonstrations immediately," he said in a televised statement. "It is true that there have been some mistakes, extremism in police response." He also stated that legal action would be taken against police officers acting "disproportionately". Erdogan remained defiant, however, pledging to push forward with the plans to redevelop Taksim Square. "If this is about holding meetings, if this is a social movement, where they gather 20, I will get up and gather 200,000 people. Where they gather 100,000, I will bring together one million from my party," he said. "Every four years we hold elections and this nation makes its choice. Those who have a problem with government's policies can express their opinions within the framework of law and democracy." Erdoğan has been in power since 2002 and has indicated he will attempt to change the country’s constitution to allow him another term in office.

Police have now withdrawn from many areas, allowing the protesters to gather. Many of the protesters saw this as a victory. “It’s the first time in Turkey’s democratic history that an unplanned, peaceful protest movement succeeded in changing the government’s approach and policy,” said Sinan Ulgen, the chairman of the Center for Economic and Foreign Policy Studies. “It gave for the first time a strong sense of empowerment to ordinary citizens to demonstrate and further their belief that if they act like they did the last few days they can influence events in Turkey.”

Reportedly, there were more than 90 demonstrations in almost 50 cities. Amnesty International claims more than 1,000 people were injured and at least two people were killed. Video footage shows one protester run down by a police vehicle. On Sunday morning, there were clashes around the streets of Istanbul, although they were isolated. Witnesses say the atmosphere on Sunday morning was clam and largely peaceful. Demonstrators gathered around burnt cars and fires.

“He criticized Assad, but he’s the same,” said Murat Uludag, 32, who stood off to the side as protesters fought with police. “He’s crazy. No one knows what he’s doing or thinking. He’s completely crazy. Whatever he says today, he will say something different tomorrow.”

Many of the protesters said Erdoğan’s leadership had become increasingly dictatorial. Erdoğan appeared to mock the protesters on Twitter on Saturday, saying he could mobilize a millionpeople to support him in Taksim Square, while putting the number of protesters at 100,000.

“When he first came to power, he was a good persuader and a good speaker,” said Serder Cilik, 32, who was watching the protests. Cilik said he had voted for Erdoğan but never again would he do so. “He brainwashed people with religion, and that’s how he got the votes. He fooled us. He’s a liar and a dictator.”

An elderly man stood nearby, overheard the conversation and yelled out, “Dictator!”

Protesters stopped a municipal water truck they believed was headed to refill police water cannons. They opened the valves and flooded the street. Many newspapers were silent on the protests on Saturday, the lead article in a pro-government newspaper, Sabah, was about Erdoğan promoting a campaign against smoking. Protesters marched near the country’s pro-government networks, chanting, “Burn the state media”.

The government of Turkey stated that, as of early Sunday morning, 939 people were arrested with 79 people injured. Many have stated that number seems low.

Yesterday, The Daily Beast, a “Newsweek” publication owned by Jane Harmon, a former member of Congress who left office after accusations of spying for Israel, printed a story claiming President Obama ordered a “no fly zone” over Syria.

One hour later, the government ordered Harmon’s publications to print a retraction.

Today, Syria has its own “no fly zone.”

We are in a nuclear war already

As it is with war, the first victim is truth. The first real salvo was May 4th nuclear attack on Syria, one so obvious it is undeniable.

The American press is continually filled with one wildly inaccurate and conspiratorial monstrosity after another, each one quickly proven false. The stories that are proven true, the Syrian rebels’ “rape squads” kidnapping and murdering young women and girls in the occupied zones of Syria are censored.

Ah, but it isn’t rape when Saudi Wahhabists have issued “three-day marriages” that they say shield rebel rape gangs from the deserved stonings as required by real Koranic law.

Stories of kidnappings, of entire Christian villages slaughtered by Al Qaeda affiliates aligned with the rebel “National Council” are suppressed also as are confirmed stories of chemical weapons use by Chechen mercenaries working with the CIA and Al Qaeda against the Damascus government.

Battle lines are being drawn

Lines have been drawn, a war is now officially afoot, but a war like no other. The “allies” are led by Russia under Vladimir Putin. Today’s world struggle brings Russia to the forefront for the first time, openly at odds with her own Zionist oligarchs.

With Putin, and read carefully, are the following groups:

- President Obama, the Defense Department, State Department and Pentagon
- The Islamic Republic of Iran
- Syria
- Iraq
- Hezbollah

The “Central” or “Axis” powers make up the following:

- Germany
- Turkey (and Iraqi Kurdistan)
- Israel
- Saudi Arabia and Qatar
- Britain and France
- Senator John McCain and Al Qaeda
- The AIPAC/Israel Lobby in Congress
- The world’s corporate press as spokesman for world organized crime

The war has begun, fighting, not only in Syria but as terrorist attacks inside the United States supported by a carefully orchestrated press campaign to spread fear and lies, setting the stage for continual escalating acts of false flag terrorism, most recently Boston and Woolrich.

Background

When the world went to war in August, 1914, the colonial nation states of Europe and the Ottoman Empire began four years of slaughter, driven by secret alliances and treaties. To the world’s intellectual community, the “Great War” signaled an end to civilization. They may well have been right.

Today, despite misdirection and censorship on a massive scale, the state of Israel stands close to annihilation. Russia stands ready, backed into a corner with no other option, to obliterate the Jewish state with thermonuclear weapons.
As in 1914, it began simply. Then a Serbian anarchist killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, setting off a chain-reaction of events that led Russia to defend Serbia, France to defend Russia, Germany to defend Austria-Hungary and so on.

Sarajevo 2013, 99 years later

The realities of today’s world conflict, one fought both “cold and hot,” false flag terrorism, staged revolutions, economic holocaust and a mounting list of casualties, now in the millions, is closer to that of August 1914 than many realize.

That was a Rothschild war, pure and simple. The machinations of colonialism, central banks, debt-based currencies and key government officials, bought and sold much as they are today, brought us our first world conflict.

The war today is, in actuality, a continuation of the world conquest begun then, moving from stage to stage, communist revolution, the obliteration of Germany, the new “soft colonialism” and an unending “low-intensity conflict,” the war on terror, theatrical, scripted and phony.

Perhaps the world may be ready to learn the lessons of history that ignorance has brought to endless repetition.

It seems a few, a brave few, a “band of brothers,” may face down the narrative of victimization mythology and corruption.

What we see now, watch the controlled media, is desperation.

This war began at 2:30AM on May 2, 2013 with the sinking of an Israeli manned German Dolphin submarine that was supporting commando infiltration off the Syrian coast. The sub was spotted, submerged to 150 meters and was hit by a sophisticated guided torpedo.

Syrian helicopters remained over the site of the naval disaster until a Russian flotilla arrived, escorting a salvage ship to secure the nuclear-tipped Tomahawk cruise missiles onboard.

In retaliation, Israel began an artillery bombardment of Syrian positions outside Damascus on May 4. During that bombardment, an Israeli submarine off the coast of Lebanon launched a nuclear cruise missile. High resolution video from fifteen miles away clearly identifies the massive flash, the telltale mushroom cloud and the lightning, leaving no doubt that this was a nuclear attack.

The explosion was picked up by American Vela satellites and confirmed.

Why the White House now stands with Russia, Syria and Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin then contacted American President Barak Obama. Putin confirmed that Russia would not allow any further nuclear attacks without responding in kind against Israel and that, under the circumstances, the United States would be advised that “Israel has made her bed, and, if she chooses, she will die in it.”

The Obama administration agreed to stand aside. As partial recompense, America bought Russian helicopters for the armed forces of Afghanistan and agreed not to actively oppose installation of an S-300 air defense system in Syria, one that makes Israel’s air superiority over the region but a memory.

The May 23 Obama “bomb”

On May 23, President Obama spoke for 48 minutes, outlining American policies. The speech, one of epic importance, was misquoted, lied about and eventually censored from the press. Why? What did Obama say?

- America’s rendition program is a war crime and that prisoners are being illegally kidnapped and “tortured.” Yes, President Obama called rendition “illegal “and waterboarding “torture.”
- All drone attacks (outside Iraq and Afghanistan) were authorized by Congress and that further drone attacks require oversight. Obama admitted that many drone attacks were wrong and that there was inadequate accountability and that drone attack policies were wrong and irresponsible.
- By presidential order, no armed drone could ever be flown over the United States.

Stories about mysterious travels to parallel worldsare not uncommon. However, these reports often make us think whether these “journeys” to another world have some substance.

It is interesting that for a long time, the scientists have been developing a theory of teleportation, the phenomenon when an object is moved from one place to another in the shortest amount of time. And in 2011, this mysterious phenomenon started manifesting itself again.

In the beginning of 2011, a French scientist Luc Montagnier, who received the 2008 Nobel Prize in medicine, has shocked the scientific world. He managed to beam a DNA sample from one test tube to another. Two separate test tubes were placed next to each other. One had pure water, and the other contained a DNA molecule. The test tube containing the DNA molecule was irradiated. Incredibly, after less than a day, the DNA was found in the test tube with water! Montagnier is convinced that this is only a first step in developing the theory of teleportation.

Interestingly, in addition to radiation, a lot of stress or negative circumstances experienced by a person can have similar effect. And most stories about mysterious travels are related to these events.

One of the ancient Mexican manuscripts contains a story about a sudden appearance of an unknown soldier on October 25, 1593 in Mexico City. According to his story, it was found that his regiment was stationed in the Philippines, 9 thousand miles from Mexico! The soldier claimed that in just a few seconds before his mysterious travel he had been on guard duty at the palace of the governor of the Philippines in Manila and incidentally became a witness to the murder of the governor. The man could not explain how he ended up in Mexico. The Inquisition has sentenced the man to be burned alive. Just a few months after his execution, the soldier’s story was confirmed by merchants who arrived from the Philippines.

Another mysterious event occurred in the Belorussian Military District in 1982. During the flight of the MiG-21 aircraft which took off to monitor the weather, it disappeared from radar screens. The search for the missing aircraft produced no results. But, to the astonishment of aviators, the next morning the fighter had safely landed on the runway of the airfield. It was a complete mystery, but for the pilot the scheduled flight lasted 12 assigned minutes.

In early May of 1968, near the town of Chaskomus (Argentina) right in front of many witnesses, the car with Dr. Gerardo Vidal and his wife had vanished into thin air. Friends and relatives began searching for the car. But neither the doctor nor the car could be found. Two days later, the man made a call himself. He was calling from the Argentine Consulate in Mexico City, which is located 6,400 miles away from the place where his car had disappeared. The Vidals could not explain their mysterious disappearance. However, they recalled a very bright light flashing before their eyes and moments later discovering themselves on a completely unfamiliar route.

A similar case occurred in 1999 with a young Italian man, who was described by American police as mad, and was taken to a psychiatric hospital in New York. The young man was not dressed for the weather and “intimidated” subway passengers by talking to them in an unknown language. However, further investigation revealed that the young man was sane and healthy, but very frightened. The young man claimed that a few minutes earlier, he was coming down the trail to the Tiber River. When he looked at the water, instead of his reflection he saw a bright light, and a moment later he was lying on the cold floor of the American subway.

These stories are not unique. People were confused and had no clue about what was going on in the past, but today many scientists are inclined to believe ininvoluntary teleportation. Researchers have come up with a number of theories to explain this phenomenon. The first one was created in 1899 by a science fiction writer Ambrose Bierce from the U.S.

He explains his theory by saying“our space is like a knitted sweater: it can be put on, although, when you look closer, a sweater is full of holes. Suppose, an ant has ended up on the sleeve of the sweater. When it accidentally falls in between the loops, it will find itself in a completely different world, where it is dark and stuffy, and instead of the usual fir needles there is warm, soft skin … “

The second theory, developed by Albert Einstein, relies on the existence of a fourth spatial dimension - time. According to this explanation, the space periodically opens theblack holes, through which objects from other worlds can penetrate into our universe.

Einstein’s theory has long been utilized by other experts, the ufologists. They claim that this is how mysterious alien aircraft objects appear on our planet. Ufologists often associate mass human abduction and disappearance events with teleportation. Scientists believe that extraterrestrials have long mastered this technique, if not the ability to open black holes at will, or at least their detection.

According to the third theory by Ralph Harrison introduced in 1938, teleportation follows the laws of meteorology. For example, in the area of Bermuda anomalous zone, the teleportation areas move under the influence of the Gulf Stream. “These events can occur in the atmosphere. When the channels open between worlds, living beings and objects travel through them to a parallel world and come back. Imagine yourself … being a caterpillar that has fallen on a man’s shoe.

Suppose you need to get to the other shoe, a journey through the leg, pelvis, and the other leg which will last at least a day, and it is also dangerous because you can easily fall off. But here is a man who accidentally crossed his legs so that you ended up on the other shoe, having made an instant journey in a matter of a day! “- explains Ralph Harrison.

However, although it is too early to draw any conclusions, recent scientific developments have brought us considerably closer to unlocking the world of one of the greatest mysteries. Perhaps, in the near future mankind will be able to master the art of teleportation.

Gil Perez and His Spontaneous Teleportation

Gil Perez was a 16th century soldier and guard. He was a member of the Filipino Guardia Civil and worked as a guard at the palace of the Governor General in Manila, Philippines. His life was rather typical of a soldier in that place and time. He did his duty to his government and did his job regardless of any circumstances that arose during his guard duty — even spontaneous teleportation to another country.

Teleportation is a common theme in literature, movies and anything science fiction. The crew of the Starship Enterprise had it down to a science. The mad scientist in The Fly botched it terribly and Stephen King had it stealing the sanity of children in his short story “The Jaunt.” There is no denying that teleportation has an appeal in fiction because it strips away the location limitations of characters and it is open to interpretation; all manner of horrors can occur as a result because we simply do not know what side effects teleportation may have.

There is also an interest in real life teleportation because it would obviously be quite convenient. The real life applications could be life saving and bring people closer together. However, it could also change the face of modern warfare and make it very difficult to track criminals. That is all assuming teleportation is something we could control. What if there was no control? What if some people could teleport spontaneously without any knowledge they are about teleport? That is what reportedly happened in the case of Gil Perez.

On October 24, 1593, Gil Perez was doing his guard duties at the Governor’s palace in Manila. Chinese pirates had assassinated the governor — Gomez Perez Dasmarinas — the night before, but the guards still guarded the palace and awaited the appointment of a new governor. Tired, Gil Perez decided to lean against a wall and rest for a moment. When he opened his eyes, he was in a completely unfamiliar place. Unsure how to react, he continued to do his guard duties until he was approached by someone who started asking him questions and telling him that he was somewhere that it was impossible for him to be. Gil was in Mexico City’s Plaza Mayor.

When questioned, Gil Perez gave the story of his supposed teleportation and the death of his country’s governor. The assassination was unknown to those in Mexico City, but Gil Perez was reportedly wearing the uniform of the palace guards in Manila. He was placed in jail because it was thought he might be a deserter and/or a servant of the devil. After two months, a ship arrived from the Philippines, bringing news of the governor’s death. They said that they knew Gil Perez, though they did not know he was in Mexico City. The last time they had seen him was on October 23 at the palace.

The authorities in Mexico City decided to release Gil Perez and send him home. As there is no other account of Gil materializing anywhere, it is assumed that he never spontaneously teleported again. It was lucky for him that, if the story is true, he did not wind up in a country where Spanish was not spoken or worse, in a harsh terrain like the ocean, desert or arctic tundra. Some sources say that the story was not told until 100 years after it reportedly occurred. Other sources say that authorities documented the occurrence immediately. Without details like this, it is hard to say if the story is any more suspicious than its science fiction premise already suggests.

Israel’s Secret “Doomsday” Nuke Base Revealed by US

A location and details of a top secret Israeli base which could be used to launch nuclear attacks on China or North America was published last week. Immediate moves were made to “spin” the story away.

The base, intended to house Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) built in cooperation with India is also to include, not just a doomsday “Fuhrer-bunker” for Netanyahu and the Zionist elites but storage for nuclear, biological and chemical warheads as well.

According to intelligence sources in Pakistan, India is supplying Israel with missiles capable of carrying 10 MIRV (Multiple Independent-targetable Re-entry Vehicle) warheads each with a range of up to 11,000 miles. A single missile from this US financed complex could knock out all major population centers on America’s eastern seaboard.

The thermonuclear warheads and guidance systems for these advanced weapons were made possible through espionage activities tied to AIPAC, the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee.

Newspapers claim the underground base, one of a series being built across Israel, is part of an air defense system. This is, of course, utterly absurd.

Air defense systems are designed for stealth and mobility and never require huge underground facilities. Air defenses are meant to protect, not to “be” the primary target.

Scamming America to death

An Israeli program to use American funds earmarked for missiles defense on a nuclear command bunker and ICBM silos was “accidentally” exposed by the Department of Defense last week.

America needs more “accidents” of this kind.

Detailed plans on the massive underground facility at Tel Shahar, intended to be Israel’s answer to NORAD’s Cheyenne Mountain fortress in Colorado, were made public when the US published over 1000 pages of documents, including key information on location, design and vulnerabilities to attack.

In an attempt to “put the genie back in the bottle,” Israel and key media assets in the west published deceptive and inaccurate accounts.

From SheeraFrenkel at McClatchy News, “The Obama administration had promised to build Israel a state-of-the-art facility to house a new ballistic-missile defense system, the Arrow 3. As with all Defense Department projects, detailed specifications were made public so that contractors could bid on the $25 million project. The specifications included more than 1,000 pages of details on the facility, ranging from the heating and cooling systems to the thickness of the walls.”

Why Israel has gone “M.A.D.” (Mutually Assured Destruction)

Until a week ago, Israel, in combination with Turkey and Arab “friends” was unassailable in the region due to its American equipped air force.

Russian President Vladimir Putin changed all that when Syria’s own S 300 air defense system came on line. Israel’s air forces are now useless against Syria, a nation scheduled to be “erased from the sands of time” by Israel, part of a multi-stage global strategy against Iran, a strategy to be coordinated with India against all of South Asia and the Caspian Basin.

Putin’s “red line” left Israel only one card to play, a “nuclear wild card” devoid of credibility without deliverable long range nukes stored in hardened silos with command and control deep underground.

America, either duped or fully complicit, has given Israel that capability, a “Samson option” first strike against any nation, even America.

One might want to ask why nuclear bunker facilities for up to 80,000 elites from among the “chosen people”are being financed by the United States, a project reminiscent of Dr. Strangelove.

The “Arrow 3” fraud

The Arrow 3 missile system, designed to be a mobile launched high altitude missile interception much like the Russian designed S 300 system now active over Syria, was funded based on the unsubstantiated hypothesis that Iran’s nuclear program was, not only advanced, but that Iran would have small “missile deliverable” warheads soon.

Israel demanded the system as protection from Iranian nuclear missiles, which, according to a new IAEA report, may well never exist.

However, advance copies of the IAEA report due to be released on Monday, June 10, 2013, show that America’s intelligence assessments indicating Iran has no military nuclear program have been right all along.

The report cites that every “gram” of nuclear material has been accounted for and none has been transferred to weapons related programs.

“Nuke pundit,” David Albright is typically the source for all information used to substantiate claims of nuclear weapon development by Iran. To check on Albright’s credentials, we went to Clinton Bastin, an editor at Veterans Today and former chief nuclear weapons designer for the US Department of Energy.

In a 2011 interview with Jim W. Dean, Bastin said the following about his friend and longtime associate, David Albright, “David Albright, a physicist, former colleague, president of the non-government Institute for Science and International Security in Washington and a former consultant for IAEA inspectors, is recognized by the US news media as an expert on nuclear weapons but is not. I called David several months ago to correct inaccurate information attributed to him by New York Timesreporter William J. Broad.

I also mentioned that Pakistan probably did not have many nuclear weapons because gun-type weapons require about 100 pounds of highly enriched uranium. David said that he had seen drawings of Pakistan’s weapons and they had solid cores but were implosion, not gun-type. With that statement, I realized that David did not understand basic concepts of nuclear weapons.”

Bastin went on further and pointed out that controls long in place in Iran made it impossible for any nuclear material to have been “redirected” and that Iran’s program to enrich uranium gas to 20% could never realistically result in weapons grade material.

Both the US and Israel have known all of this all along, know this and have lied about it.

Press complicity

The Arrow III missile system was debuted on February 13, 2013 on the front page of the Jerusalem Post. This system, designed, at least as the American people are told, is depicted in a full color graphic showing the following components:

- “The Elta Electronic Industries subsidiary of IAI Electronic Group developed the Green Pine early warning and fire control radar for the Arrow 2 system. The radar carries the designation EL/M-2090 and includes the trailer mounted radar and antenna array.”

- Two other vehicles provide generator power and targeting control.

- The third vehicle tows the launching system.

Note that every component includes a “vehicle.” What, exactly, goes into the “Fuhrer-bunker” that we are told houses the Arrow III system?

When the press films or photographs a launch of an “Arrow” missile, they carefully include only the top portion of the mobile launching tube. Do they wish us to believe that, somehow, these tubes are hundreds of feet below the earth?

Can they keep “cropping” photos forever?

Thus far, the controlled press seems to miss story after story. Recently, the same press when photographing Senator John McCain on his secret trip into Syria forgot to “crop out” the Al Qaeda commanders McCain met with.

The underground “Temple of Doom”

Back in 2001, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appeared on television with media pundit Tim Russert. Rumsfeld told a worldwide audience of the secret bunker complexes that spread across Afghanistan, able to house thousands, interconnected with secret monorails, undetectable by air.

Thirteen years later, the US forces have yet to find one of these bunkers. They never existed.

The ones in Israel, however, do exist. Anyone capable of downloading an “online” bid specification can see the scope of these massive projects, conclusive proof that preparations for “doomsday” are underway in Israel.

A careful read of the “material handing” specifications is rather curious. Israel denies having nuclear weapons. No American president has ever admitted knowing of such things, a question former White House correspondent Helen Thomas has asked of every American president prior to the untimely end of her outstanding career.

Now even school children with their iPhones can read about Israel’s underground nuclear weapons storage, about equipment for storing, protecting and deploying nuclear weapons.

What they may not know is that the money that might have helped finance their college education paid for this highly secret and equally highly illegal equipment.

Three of the world's nuclear powers -- China, India and Pakistan -- have increased their nuclear arsenals over the past year, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said.

China now has 250 nuclear warheads against 240 in 2012; Pakistan has increased its warheads by about 10 to between 100 and 120; and India has also added roughly 10 for a total of 90 to 110, SIPRI said in its annual report.

The arms race is all the more disturbing, said SIPRI, because of what the institute called a "fragile" peace in Asia, characterised by growing tensions since 2008 between India and Pakistan, China and Japan, the two Koreas and others.

"While states have avoided direct conflict with each other and have stopped supporting insurgent movements on each other's territory, decades-old suspicions linger and economic integration has not been followed up with political integration," SIPRI said.

Only the two old superpowers have cut their warheads, Russia reducing its number from 10,000 to 8,500, and the United States scaling back from 8,000 to 7,700.

The warheads controlled by France stayed at 300, while Britain's remained at 225, and Israel's at 80.
SIPRI acknowledged that the figures were to a large extent estimates, as the nuclear powers aren't equally transparent, China being totally opaque, and Russia gradually becoming less open.

SIPRI does not count North Korea and Iran as nuclear powers yet, as their respective programmes are still considered in their early stages. While the global total of warheads was down, SIPRI said it did not translate into a significantly diminished nuclear threat.

"Once again there was little to inspire hope that the nuclear weapon-possessing states are genuinely willing to give up their nuclear arsenals," said SIPRI Senior Researcher Shannon Kile.

"The long-term modernisation programmes underway in these states suggest that nuclear weapons are still a marker of international status and power."

Efforts to reduce arsenals of chemical and biological weapons have also been slow, according to SIPRI, a long-time advocate of abolishing weapons of mass destruction.

The United States and Russia have not destroyed all their chemical weapons in 2012 as promised. Syria, in the grip of a bloody uprising for more than two years, has said it is prepared to use its weapons in the case of foreign attack.

SIPRI figures also show that the number of peacekeepers deployed around the world fell by more than 10 percent in 2012, due in part to the beginning withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan. How far they fall will depend on how many peacekeepers will be deployed in Mali, where French-backed forces are fighting Islamist rebels -- and potentially in Syria.

The report noted that the United Nations appeared paralysed over the Syria crisis, as China and Russia had blocked Security Council moves to intervene. "The lack of action over Syria in 2012 highlighted the weakness of international commitment to the responsibility to protect," said senior researcher Jair van der Lijn.

"In the end, national interests and deep-rooted fears that the responsibility to protect undermines the principle of state sovereignty, seem to weigh heavier than the plight of populations caught up in conflict," he added. SIPRI's annual report also contains data already published, including figures showing a decline in global arms spending in 2012 of 0.5 percent, the first drop since 1998.

The report noted that China had overtaken Britain as the world's fifth largest arms exporter after the United States, Russia, Germany and France.

The statement “everything causes cancer” has become a popular hyperbole, and one that some people use as rhetorical fodder to excuse their own dietary and lifestyle failures, particularly as they pertain to cancer risk. But the truth of the matter is that many common food items have, indeed, been scientifically shown to increase cancer risk, and some of them substantially. Here are 10 of the most unhealthy, cancer-causing foods that you should never eat again:

1) Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). It goes without saying that GMOs have no legitimate place in any cancer-free diet, especially now that both GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them have been shown to cause rapid tumor growth. But GMOs are everywhere, including in most food derivatives made from conventional corn, soybeans, and canola. However, you can avoid them by sticking with certified organic, certified non-GMO verified, and locally-grown foods that are produced naturally without biotechnology.

2) Processed meats. Most processed meat products, including lunch meats, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs, contain chemical preservatives that make them appear fresh and appealing, but that can also cause cancer. Both sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate have been linked to significantly increasing the risk of colon and other forms of cancer, so be sure to choose only uncured meat products made without nitrates, and preferably from grass-fed sources.

3) Microwave popcorn. They might be convenient, but those bags of microwave popcorn are lined with chemicals that are linked to causing not only infertility but also liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in microwave popcorn bag linings as “likely” carcinogenic, and several independent studies have linked the chemical to causing tumors. Similarly, the diacetyl chemical used in the popcorn itself is linked to causing both lung damage and cancer.

4) Soda pop. Like processed meats, soda pop has been shown to cause cancer as well. Loaded with sugar, food chemicals, and colorings, soda pop acidifies the body and literally feeds cancer cells. Common soda pop chemicals like caramel color and its derivative 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) have also specifically been linked to causing cancer.

5) ‘Diet’ foods, beverages. Even worse than conventional sugar-sweetened soda pop, though, is “diet” soda pop and various other diet beverages and foods. A recent scientific review issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) of more than 20 separate research studies found that aspartame, one of the most common artificial sweeteners, causes a range of illnesses including birth defects and cancer. Sucralose (Splenda), saccharin and various other artificial sweeteners have also been linked to causing cancer.

6) Refined ‘white’ flours. Refined flour is a common ingredient in processed foods, but its excess carbohydrate content is a serious cause for concern. A study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Mile Markers, and Prevention found that regular consumption of refined carbohydrates was linked to a 220 percent increase in breast cancer among women. High-glycemic foods in general have also been shown to rapidly raise blood sugar levels in the body, which directly feeds cancer cell growth and spread.

7) Refined sugars. The same goes for refined sugars, which tend to rapidly spike insulin levels and feed the growth of cancer cells. Fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are particularly offensive, as cancer cells have been shown to quickly and easily metabolize them in order to proliferate. And since cookies, cakes, pies, sodas, juices, sauces, cereals, and many other popular, mostly processed, food items are loaded with HFCS and other refined sugars, this helps explain why cancer rates are on the rise these days.

8) Conventional apples, grapes, and other ‘dirty’ fruits. Many people think they are eating healthy when they buy apples, grapes, or strawberries from the store. But unless these fruits are organic or verified to be pesticide-free, they could be a major cancer risk. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that up to 98 percent of all conventional produce, and particularly the type found on its “dirty” fruits list, is contaminated with cancer-causing pesticides.

9) Farmed salmon. Farmed salmon is another high-risk cancer food, according to Dr. David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany. According to his assessment, farmed salmon not only lacks vitamin D, but it is often contaminated with carcinogenic chemicals, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), flame retardants, pesticides, and antibiotics.

10) Hydrogenated oils. They are commonly used to preserve processed foods and keep them shelf-stable. But hydrogenated oils alter the structure and flexibility of cell membranes throughout the body, which can lead to a host of debilitating diseases such as cancer. Some manufacturers are phasing out the use of hydrogenated oils and replacing them with palm oil and other safer alternatives, but trans fats are still widely used in processed food.

Lost Egyptian City Finally Found After 1, 200 Years Under The Sea

A lost ancient Egyptian city submerged beneath the sea 1,200 years ago is starting to reveal what life was like in the legendary port of Thonis-Heracleion.

For centuries it was thought to be a legend, a city of extraordinary wealth mentioned by Herodotus, visited by Helen of Troy and Paris, her lover, but apparently buried under the sea. In fact, Heracleion was true, and a decade after divers began uncovering its treasures, archaeologists have produced a picture of what life was like in the city in the era of the pharaohs.

The city, also called Thonis, disappeared beneath the Mediterranean around 1,200 years ago and was found during a survey of the Egyptian shore at the beginning of the last decade. Now its life at the heart of trade routes in classical times are becoming clear, with researchers forming the view that the city was the main customs hub through which all trade from Greece and elsewhere in the Mediterranean entered Egypt.

They have discovered the remains of more than 64 ships buried in the thick clay and sand that now covers the sea bed. Gold coins and weights made from bronze and stone have also been found, hinting at the trade that went on. Giant 16 foot statues have been uncovered and brought to the surface while archaeologists have found hundreds of smaller statues of minor gods on the sea floor.

Slabs of stone inscribed in both ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian have also been brought to the surface.
Dozens of small limestone sarcophagi were also recently uncovered by divers and are believed to have once contained mummified animals, put there to appease the gods.

Dr Damian Robinson, director of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford, who is part of the team working on the site, said: “It is a major city we are excavating. “The site has amazing preservation. We are now starting to look at some of the more interesting areas within it to try to understand life there.

“We are getting a rich picture of things like the trade that was going on there and the nature of the maritime economy in the Egyptian late period. There were things were coming in from Greece and the Phoenicians.

“We have hundreds of small statues of gods and we are trying to find where the temples to these gods were in the city. “The ships are really interesting as it is the biggest number of ancient ships found in one place and we have found over 700 ancient anchors so far.”

The researchers, working with German TV documentary makers, have also created a three dimensional reconstruction of the city. At its heart was a huge temple to the god Amun-Gereb, the supreme god of the Egyptians at the time. From this stretched a vast network of canals and channels, which allowed the city to become the most important port in the Mediterranean at the time.

Last month archaeologists from around the world gathered at the University of Oxford to discuss the discoveries starting to emerge from the treasures found in Heracleion, named for Hercules, who legend claimed had been there.

It was also mentioned fleetingly in ancient texts. Dr Robinson said: “It was the major international trading port for Egypt at this time. It is where taxation was taken on import and export duties. All of this was run by the main temple.”

Submerged under 150 feet of water, the site sits in what is now the Bay of Aboukir. In the 8th Century BC, when the city is thought to have been built, it would have sat at the mouth of the River Nile delta as it opened up into the Mediterranean.

Scientists still have little idea what caused the city to slip into the water nearly 1,000 years later, but it is thought that gradual sea level rise combined with a sudden collapse of the unstable sediment the city was built on caused the area to drop by around 12 feet.

Over time the city faded from memory and its existence, along with other lost settlements along the coast, was only known from a few ancient texts. French underwater archaeologist Dr Franck Goddio was the first to rediscover the city while doing surveying of the area while looking for French warships that sank there in the 18 century battle of the Nile.

When divers began sifting down through the thick layers of sand and mud, they could barely believe what they found.“The archaeological evidence is simply overwhelming,” said Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, an archaeologist at the University of Oxford has also been taking part in the excavation.

“By lying untouched and protected by sand on the sea floor for centuries they are brilliantly preserved.”The researchers now also hope that they may even find some sarcophagi used to bury humans in some of the outlying areas around the sunken city.

“The discoveries enhance the importance of the specific location of the city standing at the 'Mouth of the Sea of the Greek’,” said Dr Goddio, who has led the excavation. “We are just at the beginning of our research. We will probably have to continue working for the next 200 years for Thonis-Heracleion to be fully revealed and understood.”

1. Graves of a Catholic woman and her Protestant husband, who were not allowed to be buried together. On the Protestant part of this cemetery J.W.C van Gorcum, colonel of the Dutch Cavalry and militia commissioner in Limburg is buried. His wife, lady J.C.P.H van Aefferden is buried in the Catholic part. They were married in 1842,the lady was 22 and the colonel 33, he was a protestant and didn’t belong to the nobility.

This caused quite a commotion in Roermond. After being married for 38 years, the colonel died in 1880 and was buried in the protestant part of the cemetery against the wall. His wife died in 1888 and had decided not to be buried in the family tomb but on the other side of the wall, which was the closest she could get to her husband. Two clasped hands connect the graves across the wall.

2. The Recoleta Cemetery is most famous for being the burial ground of Eva Duarte de Peron "Evita," but it actually holds many famous military leaders, presidents, scientists, poets and other important or wealthy Argentineans.

David Alleno was an Italian immigrant who dreamed of being buried in the prestigious cemetery where he worked as a caretaker from 1881 to 1910. He saved enough money to buy a space and built his own tomb. He even traveled back to his home country to find an artist who could carve his own figure in marble, complete with keys, broom & watering can. Legend says that after the tomb was finished David took his own life inside his grave, but many reputable sources say he died years after the tomb was constructed.

3. Headstone also located at the Recoleta Cemetery in Argentina. What's unusual about it? Well, a man sitting on his sofa looking seriously at the horizon while a woman is seated in another one, at his back, but they are looking in opposite directions. They are placed like that because he died first, so the family made his Mausoleum. Some years later, when his wife died, in her testament she asked to be placed that way so as to represent their marriage: they spent their last 30 years without speaking a word

4. Fernand Arbelot was a musician and actor who died in 1990 and was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery. He wished to gaze at the face of his wife for eternity.

5. This unique monument shows a young boy jumping upward, out of his wheelchair. Confined to the chair most of his young life, he is now free of earthly burdens.

6. Gravestones stacked around a tree which has grown up since part of the St. Pancras burial ground was cleared in the 1860's to make way for the London & Midland railway line. The young architect supervising the work was Thomas Hardy, the well-known author.

7. Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris is possibly the most visited graveyard in the world, and it's known as much for the beauty of its monuments as for the celebrity of its occupants. However, arguably the most dramatic tomb belongs to an author most people have never heard of.

Georges Rodenbach was a 19th century Belgian writer, best known for a book pretty much relegated to serious literary students. Bruges-la-Morte, a symbolic novel published in 1892, was about a man mourning his dead wife. So, it's painfully poignant that Rodenbach's tomb depicts a patina bronze likeness of himself actually emerging from the grave, with a rose in one hand.

8. When Jonathan Reed's wife, Mary, died in 1893, the widower didn't want to leave her side. In fact, he was so devoted that he moved into her tomb, where he lived (with a parrot) for over 10 years. Reed died in 1905 and was finally interred with Mary.

9. The most famous attraction in Hiawatha, Kansas is a 1930's tomb sitting in Mount Hope Cemetery near the southeast edge of town. John Milburn Davis came to Hiawatha in 1879 at the age of 24. After a short time, he married Sarah Hart, the daughter of his employer. Her family did not approve. The Davises started their own farm, prospered and were married for 50 years. When Sarah died in 1930, the Davises were wealthy. Over the next 7 years, John Davis spent most of that wealth on Sarah's grave.

The amount spent on the Davis Memorial has been estimated at anywhere between $100,000 and several times that amount. In any case, it was a large amount and included the signing over of the farm and mansion. This was during the Depression, when money was tight.

Several reasons are offered for the extravagance including great love or guilt, anger at Sarah's family, and a desire that the Davis fortune be exhausted before John's death.

The Davis Memorial grew by stages, which is bit of a shame. If it had been planned, it might have been built on a larger lot and made more attractive. The memorial began with a typical gravestone, but John worked with Horace England, a Hiawatha monument dealer, making the gravesite more and more elaborate. There are 11 life-size statues of John and Sarah Davis made of Italian marble, many stone urns and a marble canopy that is reported as weighing over 50 tons.

10. Jack Crowell owned the last wooden clothespin manufacturing factory in the United States. He originally wanted a real spring in the clothespin so that children could play on it. He is buried in Middlesex, VT.

The 10 Inventions of Nikola Tesla That Change The World

Nikola Tesla is finally beginning to attract real attention and encourage serious debate nearly 70 years after his death. Was he for real? A crackpot? Part of an early experiment in corporate-government control?

We know that he was undoubtedly persecuted by the energy power brokers of his day -- namely Thomas Edison, whom we are taught in school to revere as a genius. He was also attacked by J.P. Morgan and other "captains of industry." Upon Tesla's death on January 7th, 1943, the U.S. government moved into his lab and apartment confiscating all of his scientific research, some of which has been released by the FBI through the Freedom of Information Act. (I've embedded the first 250 pages below and have added a link to the .pdf of the final pages, 290 in total).

Besides his persecution by corporate-government interests (which is practically a certification of authenticity), there is at least one solid indication of Nikola Tesla's integrity -- he tore up a contract with Westinghouse that was worth billions in order to save the company from paying him his huge royalty payments.

But, let's take a look at what Nikola Tesla -- a man who died broke and alone -- has actually given to the world. For better or worse, with credit or without, he changed the face of the planet in ways that perhaps no man ever has.

1. Alternating Current -- This is where it all began, and what ultimately caused such a stir at the 1893 World's Expo in Chicago. A war was leveled ever-after between the vision of Edison and the vision of Tesla for how electricity would be produced and distributed. The division can be summarized as one of cost and safety: The DC current that Edison (backed by General Electric) had been working on was costly over long distances, and produced dangerous sparking from the required converter (called a commutator). Regardless, Edison and his backers utilized the general "dangers" of electric current to instill fear in Tesla's alternative: Alternating Current. As proof, Edison sometimes electrocuted animals at demonstrations. Consequently, Edison gave the world the electric chair, while simultaneously maligning Tesla's attempt to offer safety at a lower cost. Tesla responded by demonstrating that AC was perfectly safe by famously shooting current through his own body to produce light. This Edison-Tesla (GE-Westinghouse) feud in 1893 was the culmination of over a decade of shady business deals, stolen ideas, and patent suppression that Edison and his moneyed interests wielded over Tesla's inventions. Yet, despite it all, it is Tesla's system that provides power generation and distribution to North America in our modern era.

2. Light -- Of course he didn't invent light itself, but he did invent how light can be harnessed and distributed. Tesla developed and used florescent bulbs in his lab some 40 years before industry "invented" them. At the World's Fair, Tesla took glass tubes and bent them into famous scientists' names, in effect creating the first neon signs. However, it is his Tesla Coil that might be the most impressive, and controversial. The Tesla Coil is certainly something that big industry would have liked to suppress: the concept that the Earth itself is a magnet that can generate electricity (electromagnetism) utilizing frequencies as a transmitter. All that is needed on the other end is the receiver -- much like a radio.

3. X-rays -- Electromagnetic and ionizing radiation was heavily researched in the late 1800s, but Tesla researched the entire gamut. Everything from a precursor to Kirlian photography, which has the ability to document life force, to what we now use in medical diagnostics, this was a transformative invention of which Tesla played a central role. X-rays, like so many of Tesla's contributions, stemmed from his belief that everything we need to understand the universe is virtually around us at all times, but we need to use our minds to develop real-world devices to augment our innate perception of existence.

4. Radio -- Guglielmo Marconi was initially credited, and most believe him to be the inventor of radio to this day. However, the Supreme Court overturned Marconi's patent in 1943, when it was proven that Tesla invented the radio years previous to Marconi. Radio signals are just another frequency that needs a transmitter and receiver, which Tesla also demonstrated in 1893 during a presentation before The National Electric Light Association. In 1897 Tesla applied for two patents US 645576, and US 649621. In 1904, however, The U.S. Patent Office reversed its decision, awarding Marconi a patent for the invention of radio, possibly influenced by Marconi's financial backers in the States, who included Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie. This also allowed the U.S. government (among others) to avoid having to pay the royalties that were being claimed by Tesla.

5. Remote Control -- This invention was a natural outcropping of radio. Patent No. 613809 was the first remote controlled model boat, demonstrated in 1898. Utilizing several large batteries; radio signals controlled switches, which then energized the boat's propeller, rudder, and scaled-down running lights. While this exact technology was not widely used for some time, we now can see the power that was appropriated by the military in its pursuit of remote controlled war. Radio controlled tanks were introduced by the Germans in WWII, and developments in this realm have since slid quickly away from the direction of human freedom.

6. Electric Motor -- Tesla's invention of the electric motor has finally been popularized by a car brandishing his name. While the technical specifications are beyond the scope of this summary, suffice to say that Tesla's invention of a motor with rotating magnetic fields could have freed mankind much sooner from the stranglehold of Big Oil. However, his invention in 1930 succumbed to the economic crisis and the world war that followed. Nevertheless, this invention has fundamentally changed the landscape of what we now take for granted: industrial fans, household applicances, water pumps, machine tools, power tools, disk drives, electric wristwatches and compressors.

7. Robotics -- Tesla's overly enhanced scientific mind led him to the idea that all living beings are merely driven by external impulses. He stated: "I have by every thought and act of mine, demonstrated, and does so daily, to my absolute satisfaction that I am an automaton endowed with power of movement, which merely responds to external stimuli." Thus, the concept of the robot was born. However, an element of the human remained present, as Tesla asserted that these human replicas should have limitations -- namely growth and propagation. Nevertheless, Tesla unabashedly embraced all of what intelligence could produce. His visions for a future filled with intelligent cars, robotic human companions, and the use of sensors, and autonomous systems are detailed in a must-read entry in the Serbian Journal of Electrical Engineering, 2006.

8. Laser -- Tesla's invention of the laser may be one of the best examples of the good and evil bound up together within the mind of man. Lasers have transformed surgical applications in an undeniably beneficial way, and they have given rise to much of our current digital media. However, with this leap in innovation we have also crossed into the land of science fiction. From Reagan's "Star Wars" laser defense system to today's Orwellian "non-lethal" weapons' arsenal, which includes laser rifles and directed energy "death rays," there is great potential for development in both directions.

9 and 10. Wireless Communications and Limitless Free Energy -- These two are inextricably linked, as they were the last straw for the power elite -- what good is energy if it can't be metered and controlled? Free? Never. J.P. Morgan backed Tesla with $150,000 to build a tower that would use the natural frequencies of our universe to transmit data, including a wide range of information communicated through images, voice messages, and text. This represented the world's first wireless communications, but it also meant that aside from the cost of the tower itself, the universe was filled with free energy that could be utilized to form a world wide web connecting all people in all places, as well as allow people to harness the free energy around them. Essentially, the 0's and 1's of the universe are embedded in the fabric of existence for each of us to access as needed. Nikola Tesla was dedicated to empowering the individual to receive and transmit this data virtually free of charge. But we know the ending to that story . . . until now?

Tesla had perhaps thousands of other ideas and inventions that remain unreleased. A look at his hundreds of patents shows a glimpse of the scope he intended to offer. If you feel that the additional technical and scientific research of Nikola Tesla should be revealed for public scrutiny and discussion, instead of suppressed by big industry and even our supposed institutions of higher education, join the world's call to tell power brokers everywhere that we are ready to Occupy Energy and learn about what our universe really has to offer.

The release of Nikola Tesla's technical and scientific research -- specifically his research into harnessing electricity from the ionosphere at a facility called Wardenclyffe -- is a necessary step toward true freedom of information. As an aside: there are some who have pointed out that Tesla's experimentation with the ionosphere very well could have caused the massive explosion over Tunguska, Siberia in 1908, which leveled an estimated 60 million trees over 2,150 square kilometers, and may even have led to the much maligned HAARP technology. I submit that we would do well to remember that technology is never the true enemy; it is the misuse of technology that can enslave rather than free mankind from its animal-level survivalism.

Early Earth was not very hospitable when it came to jump starting life. In fact, new research shows that life on Earth may have come from out of this world.

Lawrence Livermore scientist Nir Goldman and University of Ontario Institute of Technology colleague Isaac Tamblyn (a former LLNL postdoc) found that icy comets that crashed into Earth millions of years ago could have produced life building organic compounds, including the building blocks of proteins and nucleobases pairs of DNA and RNA.

Comets contain a variety of simple molecules, such as water, ammonia, methanol and carbon dioxide, and an impact event with a planetary surface would provide an abundant supply of energy to drive chemical reactions.

"The flux of organic matter to Earth via comets and asteroids during periods of heavy bombardment may have been as high as 10 trillion kilograms per year, delivering up to several orders of magnitude greater mass of organics than what likely pre-existed on the planet," Goldman said.

Goldman's earlier work is based on computationally intensive models, which, in the past, could only capture 10-30 picoseconds of a comet impact event. However new simulations, developed on LLNL's supercomputers Rzcereal and Aztec, Goldman used much more computationally efficient models and was able to capture hundreds of picoseconds of the impacts -- much closer to chemical equilibrium.

"As a result, we now observe very different and a wider array of hydrocarbon chemical products that, upon impact, could have created organic material that eventually led to life," Goldman said.

Comets can range in size from 1.6 kilometers up to 56 kilometers. Comets passing through Earth's atmosphere are heated externally but remain cool internally. Upon impact with the planetary surface, a shock wave is generated due to the sudden compression. Shock waves can create sudden, intense pressures and temperatures, which could affect chemical reactions within a comet before it interacts with the ambient planetary environment. An oblique collision where an extraterrestrial icy body impacts a planetary atmosphere with a glancing blow could generate thermodynamic conditions conducive to organic synthesis. These processes could result in significant concentrations of organic species being delivered to Earth.

The team found that moderate shock pressures and temperatures (approximately 360,000 atmospheres of pressure and 4,600 degrees Fahrenheit) in a carbon-dioxide-rich ice mixture produced a number of nitrogen-containing heterocycles, which dissociate to form functionalized aromatic hydrocarbons upon expansion and cooling. These are thought to be prebiotic precursors to DNA and RNA base pairs.

In contrast, higher shock conditions (about 480,000 to 600,000 atmospheres of pressure and 6,200-8,180 degrees Fahrenheit) resulted in the synthesis of methane and formaldehyde, as well as some long-chain carbon molecules. These compounds are known to act as precursors to amino acids and complex organic synthesis. All shock compression simulations at these conditions have produced significant quantities of new, simple carbon-nitrogen bonded compounds upon expansion and cooling, which are known prebiotic precursors.

"Cometary impacts could result in the synthesis of prebiotic molecules without the need for other 'special' conditions, such as the presence of catalysts, UV radiation, or special pre-existing conditions on a planet," Goldman said. "This data is critical in understanding the role of impact events in the formation of life-building compounds both on early Earth and on other planets and in guiding future experimentation in these areas."

The research will appear on the cover of the June 20 issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry A.
