Investigating the monster in 'The Aswang Phenomenon'
By

It scares children into coming home before dark, and gives even the toughest-looking grown-up the shivers. It can be blamed for anything and everything that seems wrong – from strange neighbors to mysterious murders. It's the personification of all things evil.

There are varying opinions on what it looks like, or even what it is, exactly. But millions believe it exists. Almost everyone in the country has an aswang story to tell.
The aswang can turn into a big dog or pig. It can sever its upper body and fly away, leaving its lower half on the ground. It has an extremely long tongue, all the better to suck a baby from the mother's womb.

In the Philippines, the existence of this supernatural creature is often taken for granted. Little kids are warned by their parents to stay inside, or else the aswang will get them.

400 years of fear

Canadian filmmaker Jordan Clark first encountered the aswang in Wrye Martin and Barry Poltermann's 1994 film "Aswang." Six years after seeing the film, Clark visited the Philippines, where he observed how Filipinos were both religious and superstitious. Wanting to understand how these two seemingly contradictory beliefs could be held at the same time, he began to research on Philippine folklore, and again came across the aswang.

"This creature seemed able to do anything. It could transform into animals, fly, cast magic spells, heal itself, and really didn't seem to need a specific foodsource. Pregnant women, the sick, or children, it was a perfect subject for a film," said Clark, who returned to the Philippines to film his own interpretation of the folklore.

"In the end I felt I had a pretty strong film but was always troubled by the lack of consistent information regarding this creature. I realized while screening it that without a generalized understanding and acceptance of the aswang, like many Filipinos have. So I flew back to the Philippines to answer this lingering question: what is the aswang?" Clark said in his documentary "The Aswang Phenomenon."

As Clark discovered, asking this question led to several other questions. Finding the answers took Clark on a journey to several parts of the country, including Capiz, the aswang's rumored home.

"After learning about the various manifestations of the aswang described by Dr. Maximo Ramos (vampire, viscera sucker, witch, ghoul, and were-dog) I wanted to know why there were so many, why they were predominantly women, where the manananggal came from, where the word came from, and why Capiz was suspected as their home," Clark said.

One creature, many descriptions

What intrigued Clark was how the aswang, unlike the other creatures in Philippine Lower Mythology, had no consistent image or behavior associated with it. "I usually jest that there are as many descriptions of the aswang as there are Filipinos," Clark told GMA News Online.

"The Aswang Phenomenon" is a comprehensive survey of information on the aswang, told from the unique perspective as someone who didn't grow up hearing the stories. But apart from what can be seen in the documentary itself, what Clark has done is provide a venue for further exploration of the subject.

"The Aswang Phenomenon" is 77 minutes long, but it goes beyond the running time, as many of those who view the film have their own tales to add to the narrative.

"I love that people are taking the time to comment on YouTube to share their experiences and expand on the subjects I have touched on in the film. If one was to watch the film and read the comments, their understanding of the aswang would be pretty solid," Clark said.

He describes "The Aswang Phenomenon" as a compilation of information. Since the documentary came out in 2009, Clark has received several emails from people who became interested in the aswang, including students who were assigned to do work on the subject.

"Its purpose is to create a starting point for those who wish to conduct their own research," Clark said.

The aswang and Pinoy culture

The aswang is often depicted in horror movies and stories as a fearsome creature, but it's not often that people get to go beyond the spooky tales and exchange views on how it figures in the lives of Filipinos. Clark shared that the most striking thing he came across was how intertwined the aswang is with Philippine history.

"There is this enormous evolution that the aswang has been taken through – it's use in pre-colonial indigenous and animist beliefs, social control by the church, de-sexualizing women, attempting to end matriarchal societies, unchecked papers through the turn of the 20th century, and finally through amazing artistic interpretations. It is truly astounding," said Clark, who covered the evolution in his film.

One of the most important parts in the film sheds some light on why Capiz is believed to be where aswangs come from. "What I discovered as the reason I believe Capiz is suspected as their home was both eye-opening and heartbreaking," said Clark.

After completing the documentary, he decided to put it online. This decision was partly due to his experience conducting research for the documentary, where he met some resistance from members of the academe.

"There are volumes of incredible research in the Philippines that will die on old dusty bookshelves because of this elitist mentality. It is my opinion that research is to educate everyone — which is why I made the documentary free to the public," he said.

Clark shared that in contrast, the arts community was very helpful. The documentary includes clips and information from Regal Films, horror director Peque Gallaga, author Gilda Cordero Fernando, and comics writer Budjette Tan.

"There were so many Filipinos who embraced my research, took me into their communities, shared their connections and trusted me with their stories. The Philippines has an incredibly rich and fascinating culture. To experience and start to understand it, one needs only to look as far as the artists who represent it," Clark said.– KDM, GMA News

Socializing with Bears

Socializing with Bears in Russia
At the very eastern part of Russia, where lands of the USA and the Russian Federation nearly adjoining each other and only small neck splits these two spacious countries, there are Chukotka peninsula and the Chukotka autonomous district situated.

The place isn’t so populated and we cannot say for sure what kind of inhabitants it has more, people or white bears. It is the same thing as in New York city, we can’t say what it has more – tourists or yellow cabs. The most densely populated city of the region and its capital as well is Anadyr with 11,000 of citizens according to 2002 population census.

Bear kissing the Russian GuardBut just imagine yourself how many residents the city and the region altogether had 50 or 60 years ago when the colonization of the region just began.

The climate is very severe and sometimes weather can be so fierce in winter that the temperature falls 40C degrees below zero (it is the same by Fahrenheit, -40F) so that poor white bears and their children start starving and freezing though they aren’t supposed to freeze with such a jacket of their.

And where do you think they would search for help? Yeah, you are absolutely right, they will go to their next-door neighbors looking for help of any kind. But a man always was just a slab of meat, toy and bait for such a leviathan as white bear.

And beliefs aren’t always so true-to-life. Or may be it is the climate and the Russians with their spirit are responsible for?

People didn’t turn their backs on the poor and starving animals and started to feed them every now and then. Of course you do not have such big amounts of meat at home to feed several white bears. And people decided to feed the bears up with what they had in abundance – tins, or to be more exact, condensed milk.

Condensed Milk
From the immemorial and so far, the usual condensed milk tin looked like that one on the picture. At first people who were striving to help bears opened such a tin with a tin-opener and then gave the can to the she-bear who licked all the milk from tin and then feed her little bears with it.

Alledgely Noah's Ark Discovered

Satellite photographs taken years earlier of a boat like formation on Mt. Ararat in Turkey intrigued Ron Wyatt. This formation had earlier been discovered by the same analyst (Dr. Brandenburg of Ohio State University) that discovered the nuclear missiles in Cuba.

While a subsequent expedition concluded that "there was nothing of archeological significance," in the formation, Ron felt it was worth checking out. He flew to Turkey and arrived at the ark site. Since the formation was mostly buried in mud, he felt it was too big a project for him. He returned to the his home in the United States and asked his friends to pray that God would do something to expose more of the ark.

Several month later, an unusual earthquake occurred causing the ark to be exposed an additional 20 vertical feet. The ark was measured and its internal structure was thoroughly mapped out with metal detectors and ground penetrating radar. The patterns clearly showed the ribs of the ark, an ~10 foot wide door near the front, two large water tanks near the front door, and large stabilizers running the length of the ship. The length of the ship was measured independently by two teams and found to be 515 feet long. Since Moses who wrote the book of Genesis was familiar with the Royal Egyptian cubit which is 20.6 inches, the biblical record of 300 cubits is exactly correct! (300 cubits x 20.6 /12 = 515 feet)

A metal detector scan showed the presence of metal at the joints of the ark. Note the regular pattern of these joints. Later the joints were excavated and the metal analyzed. Many of the joints were held together with large rivets. The metallurgical structure indicated that the makers had a fairly advanced level of knowledge of metal alloys. A computer reconstruction based upon the ruin profile showed that the original shape had a highly sophisticated profile.

The piece of petrified wood from the Ark shown below was excavated in the presence of a number of Turkish officials. This piece was sawn in several places, exposing the wood grain. Note the lamination of 3 layers in the photograph. Later analysis confirmed its organic nature. After many corroborating tests, the Turkish government agreed that the structure was indeed Noah's Ark. They subsequently built a Visitors Center near the Ark. Due to ongoing fighting between the Turkish government and Kurdish rebels, the Visitors Center and the area have restricted access. The goal eventually is to build a protective structure over the ark and begin excavations.

Later expeditions also located what appears to be Noah's first home after the flood and the grave sites of Mr. and Mrs. Noah. The graves were evidenced by petroglyphs on the large tombstones. These were within ~5 miles of the Ark. Unfortunately, the graves were subsequently exhumed by grave robbers. The Turkish government later reported that a bodice that Mrs. Noah was wearing, which was covered with large precious stones, was sold on the Turkish black market for around $75 million. One of the burial crypts was later recovered and is in a back room of a museum in Ankara, Turkey. It is 18 feet long! Enormous human bones appeared in some of the hotels in the area soon after the graves were robbed. The size of the bones suggests that the Antediluvians were between 12-15 feet tall!

Aswangs in Western Visayas

$

Aside from sugar, Western Visayas is also famous for its aswangs. Aswangs are the scariest of all supernatural creatures in the Philippines, commonly appearing as bloodthirsty eaters of humans. The myth of the aswang is popular particularly in Panay. The province of Capiz even parlayed this notoriety into a festival. The Aswang Festival of Capiz, which created a stir with local Church groups a while back, now attracts hundreds of tourists yearning for some thrill and excitement, and in the process created livelihood oppotunities for Capiceños.

Perhaps the most popular aswang in Western Visayas is Teniente Gimo. According to legend, Teniente Gimo was a real-life Teniente del Barrio (or Barangay Chairman in present-day terms) in Dingle, Iloilo. He is said to possess supernatural powers and can change into any animal. Various night-time AM radio dramas have depicted him either as a blood-sucking villain terrorizing small villages or as a sort of local “superhero” who used his supernatural powers to help the weak. Another more recent incarnation of the aswang myth is that of Maria Labó. One version of the myth says Maria Labó used to be a beautiful barrio lass who was raped by village men. Swearing revenge, she is said to roam the fringes of small towns victimizing young men. Another version describes Maria Labó as a cannibal who ate her own two sons. Maria Labó is said to be fond of eating human liver and is recognizable by a huge scar across her face, thus the name Maria Labó.

Aside from Teniente Gimo and Maria Labó, one can also hear many scary tales of kapres, dwendes, engkanto, santermo (St. Elmo's Fire), white ladies, manug-hiwits (or mangkukulam) all across the region. Back when there was no cable TV, I used to listen to terrifying aswang stories on our wooden AM transistor radio and one of my favorite programs was the story of Teniente Gimo.

Much has been written about the socio-psychological and anthropological explanation for the persistence of the aswang myth in Filipino folklore. But the first time I heard of a scientific explanation of the aswang myth was from Mar Roxas, Mr. Palengke himself. Back when I was still his executive assistant at DTI, I heard him talk to several important visitors in Capiz about a mysterious disease called Dystonia de Panay and how it may have contributed to the perpetuation of the aswang myth in the region. Dystonia de Panay (scientific name: "torsion dystonia-parkinsonism") or lubag in Ilonggo is a rare musco-skeletal disease found only in Panay. I don’t know who exactly discovered it but a scientific study found that there is an unusually high frequency of dystonia in Panay, particularly in the town of Dingle, Iloilo (where Teniente Gimo supposedly came from) and several areas in Capiz province. Of the 50 recorded cases of dystonia, 23 are from Iloilo and 19 of are from Capiz and all are males. It is called lubag in the vernacular because persons with this disease are afflicted by intermittent twisting movements, muscular contortions and shuffling gaits. There was no known cure for the disease. The said study's Molecular genetic analysis indicates that the mutation responsible for X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism was introduced into the Ilonggo ethnic group of Panay more than 2,000 years ago.

Before it can be sufficiently examined by science and before a cure to it was found, the disease mysteriously vanished in the 1950s. To see someone afflicted with dystonia de Panay must have been a really scary sight especially to simple, superstitious folk. Hence the preponderance of aswang myths in the hinterlands. Who knows, since dystonia de Panay is a congenital disease it may suddenly appear again somewhere when we least expect it.

The Gates of Hell Opened in Guatemala?

On May 31, a giant sinkhole in downtown of Guatemala City was caused by heavy rains and tropical storm Agatha. It swallowed a three-story building. Looks like the Gates to Hell.

The sinkhole has likely been weeks or even years in the making—floodwaters from tropical storm Agatha caused the sinkhole to finally collapse, scientists say.

The sinkhole appears to be about 60 feet (18 meters) wide and about 30 stories deep, said James Currens, a hydrogeologist at the University of Kentucky.

Sinkholes are natural depressions that can form when water-saturated soil and other particles become too heavy and cause the roofs of existing voids in the soil to collapse.

Another way sinkholes can form is if water enlarges a natural fracture in a limestone bedrock layer. As the crack gets bigger, the topsoil gently slumps, eventually leaving behind a sinkhole.

It's unclear which mechanism is behind the 2010 Guatemala sinkhole, but in either case the final collapse can be sudden, Currens said.

2010 Guatemala Sinkhole Could Grow

A ruptured sewer line is thought to have caused the sinkhole that appeared in Guatemala City in 2007.

The 2010 Guatemala sinkhole could have formed in a similar fashion, Currens said. A burst sanitary or storm sewer may have been slowly saturating the surrounding soil for a long time before tropical storm Agatha added to the inundation.

"The tropical storm came along and would have dumped even more water in there, and that could have been the final trigger that precipitated the collapse," Currens said.

Depending on the makeup of the subsurface layer, the Guatemala sinkhole "could eventually enlarge and take in more buildings," he said.

Typically, officials fill in sinkholes with large rocks and other debris. But the 2010 Guatemala sinkhole "is so huge that it's going to take a lot of fill material to fill it," Currens said.

"I don't know what they're going to do."

The Four Fixed Signs Of The Zodiac And The Four Beasts in The Book of Revelations

$

They're grouped in a quadruplicity known as the quality. The qualities are cardinal, fixed and mutable. The four have a similar way of engaging with the world, and there's one fixed sign for each element.

Each of the fixed signs creates stability through the vehicle of their element. For Fixed fire (Leo)this can mean a career of self-expression, and ongoing respect in their chosen fields. For fixed water (Scorpio), permanence is found through achievement, and going deep into the timeless mysteries of the imagination, dreams, primal sexuality.
As fixed air, Aquarius fixes on a continuum that reaches into the future, and can doggedly push for reform, or spend a lifetime on their personal inventions. For fixed earth, Taurus digs into the earth, builds with real elements to construct a solid life.

It is also a coincidence that the signs were in the Book of Revelation:

"And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. (Revelation 4:7)"

More than 2,800 Dead Pigs Dumped into Chinese River; Residents Fear Drinking Water

A surge in the dumping of dead pigs upstream from Shanghai – with more than 2,800 carcasses floating into the financial hub through Monday – has followed a police campaign to curb the illicit trade in sick pig parts.

The effort to keep infected pork off dinner tables may be fueling new health fears, as Shanghai residents and local media fret over the possibility of contamination to the city's water supply, though authorities say no contamination has been detected.

Authorities have been pulling out the swollen and rotting pigs, some with their internal organs visible, since Friday – and revolting images of the carcasses in news reports and online blogs have raised public ire against local officials.

"Well, since there supposedly is no problem in drinking this water, please forward this message, if you agree, to ask Shanghai's party secretary, mayor and water authority leaders if they will be the first ones to drink this meat soup?" lawyer Gan Yuanchun said on his verified microblog.

On Monday, Shanghai officials said the number of dumped adult and piglet carcasses retrieved had reached 2,813. The city government, citing monitoring authorities, said the drinking water quality has not been affected.

Shanghai's Agriculture Committee said authorities don't know what caused the pigs to die, but that they have detected a sometimes-fatal pig disease in at least one of the carcasses. The disease is associated with the porcine circovirus, which is widespread in pigs but doesn't affect humans or other livestock.

Shanghai's city government said initial investigations had found the dead pigs had come from Jiaxing city in neighboring Zhejiang province. It said it had not found any major epidemic.

Huang Beibei, a lifetime resident of Shanghai, was the first to expose the problem when he took photos of the carcasses and uploaded them onto his microblog on Thursday.

"This is the water we are drinking," Huang wrote. "What is the government doing to address this?"

His graphic photos apparently caught the attention of local reporters, who followed up.

Huang said he's most concerned about water safety. "Though the government says the water is safe, at least I do not believe it – given the number of the pigs in the river. These pigs have died from disease," Huang said.

The dumping follows a clampdown on the illegal trade in contaminated pork.

In China, pigs that have died from disease should be either incinerated or buried, but some unscrupulous farmers and animal control officials have sold problematic carcasses to slaughterhouses. The pork harvested from such carcasses has ended up in markets. As a food safety problem, it has drawn attention from China's Ministry of Public Security, which has made it a priority to crack down on gangs that purchase dead diseased pigs and process them for illegal profits.

Zhejiang police said on their official website that police have been campaigning to rid the market of unsafe pork meat and that the efforts were stepped up this winter as Chinese families gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year in February.

In one operation last year, police in Jiaxing broke up a criminal gang that acquired and slaughtered diseased pigs. The provincial authorities said police arrested 12 suspects and confiscated nearly 12 tons of tainted pork meat.

"Ever since the police have stepped up efforts to crack down on the illicit market of sick pigs since last year, no one has come here to buy dead pigs, and the problem of pig dumping is worse than ever this year," an unnamed villager told the Jiaxing Daily newspaper, which is run by the local Communist Party.

Wang Xianjun, a government worker for Zhulin village, told the newspaper that villagers were breeding too many pigs.

Wang said the village had 10,078 dead pigs in January and another 8,325 in February. "We have limited land in the village," he said. "We do not have that much land for burial."

Zheng Fengtian, a professor at the School of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at Renmin University in Beijing, acknowledged that there is illegal trade in diseased dead pigs in China.

"According to the law, dead pigs must be burned or buried, but if there is not enough regulatory monitoring, it's possible some of them will be sold into the market at low prices," he said, adding that it isn't known how serious the problem is.

As cardinals gather to elect Pope, Catholic officials break into a sweat over news that priests share €23m building with huge gay sauna

A day ahead of the papal conclave, faces at the scandal-struck Vatican were even redder than usual after it emerged that the Holy See had purchased a €23 million (£21 million) share of a Rome apartment block that houses Europe’s biggest gay sauna.

The senior Vatican figure sweating the most due to the unlikely proximity of the gay Europa Multiclub is probably Cardinal Ivan Dias, the head of the Congregation for Evangelisation of Peoples.

This 76-year-old “prince of the church” enjoys a 12-room apartment on the first-floor of the imposing palazzo, at 2 Via Carducci, just yards from the ground floor entrance to the steamy flesh pot. There are 18 other Vatican apartments in the block, many of which house priests.
The Holy See is still reeling from allegations that the previous pontiff, Benedict XVI, had quit in reaction to the presence of a gay cabal in the curia.

And with disgraced Scottish cardinal Keith O’Brien lending new weight to charges of hypocrisy against the Church’s stance on homosexuality, La Repubblica newspaper noted that the presence of “Italy’s best known gay sauna in the premises is an embarrassment”.

Cardinal Dias, who is seen as a social conservative even by the current standards of the church hierarchy, is no doubt horrified to learn of the activities taking place a floor below.

It is not known, however, if the former archbishop of Bombay has popped downstairs to give spitiual guidances to the clients of the Europa Multiclub, given his belief that gays and lesbians can be cured of their “unnatural tendencies” through the “sacrement of penance”.

The sauna’s website promotes one of its special “bear nights”, with a video in which a rotund, hairy man strips down before changing into a priest’s outfit. It says Bruno, “a hairy, overweight pastor of souls, is free to the music of his clergyman, remaining in a thong, because he wants to expose body and soul”.

There was further embarrassment for the Holy See when the press observed that thanks to generous tax breaks it received from the last Berlusconi government, the church will have avoided hefty payments to the Italian state. The properties are recognised as part of the Holy City.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Pope Emeritus Benedict’s widely disliked right-hand man, who held the Vatican’s purse strings during the last pontificate, was said to have been the brains behind the purchase of 2 Via Carduccio in 2008.

Readers on Italian gay websites were quick to make jokes at the cardinals’ expense. One on the Gay.it site quipped: “’Oops, I took the wrong door, I thought it was the chapel.'…If you can’t go to the gay sauna for fear of being seen what do you do if you have millions of Euros stolen from Italians? You buy the apartment block with the sauna inside.”

Joseph Lozito fought for his life in subway face-off with knife-wielding madman Maksim Gelman

PUBLISHED ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2011

He came eye to eye with a killer - and decided it wasn't time for him to die.

Instead, Joseph Lozito, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound mixed martial arts buff, helped bring knife-wielding maniac Maksim Gelman's deadly rampage to a shrieking halt aboard a subway train.

"I wasn't going to go down without a fight," Lozito said Sunday from his bed at Bellevue Hospital. "I took his best shots, and I am still standing."

Scarred by deep, jagged gashes to his head, hands and arms, Lozito described the chilling underground encounter that was the final act in Gelman's 28-hour, multiborough spree that left four dead and five injured.

"I'm lucky. Four people are dead. I am not," the married father of two young sons said with tears in his eyes.

The 40-year-old ticket seller at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall was near the end of his long daily commute from Philadelphia on Saturday morning when Gelman boarded the uptown No. 3 train at Penn Station.

Lozito noticed a commotion on the platform, where cops were hunting for the alleged killer, when Gelman strolled into the middle of the front car.

"You could tell this guy was shady," he said. "I had my eye on him."

Gelman made a beeline for the motorman's car and began pounding on the door.

"Let me in!" Gelman shouted, according to Lozito.
Two cops were inside. They opened the door and demanded, "Who are you?"

"I'm the police," Gelman blurted out.

"No, you're not!" one cop said, causing Gelman to turn tail and head back toward the rear of the car where Lozito was sitting.

As the wild-eyed killer drew close to Lozito, he uttered a chilling threat: "You are going to die!"

"He lunged at me," Lozito said.

Thanks to his many hours of watching mixed martial arts on television, Lozito says he "took him down" with a single leg sweep.

"I wouldn't win any style points for taking him down, but it did the job," he said.

Gelman reached under his jacket, pulled out an 8-inch Wusthof chef's knife and began slashing.

"I was trying to get control of his wrist. I didn't really feel anything," said Lozito, who warned Gelman that he had picked the wrong guy to fight. "You better hope that I die because I'm going to come kill you," Lozito says he told Gelman.

The cops, joined by an off-duty detective who ran into the car, pulled Gelman off and arrested him.
It was only then that Lozito realized he was wounded.

"The blood was pouring out of me everywhere," he said.

A good Samaritan rushed forward and helped apply pressure to Lozito's wounds.

"He kept telling me that I needed medical attention. He stayed with me," Lozito said. "I told him, 'You gotta get me out of here. I can't die on this train. I have a wife and two kids.'"

He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors closed a 4-inch gash on the back of his head, an 8-inch wound behind his right ear, two 3-inch slashes on his left arm, a cut under his eye and two deep cuts to his thumb.

Lozito said he's no hero.

"I would have done what any other person would have done, but he picked me," he said. "I'm glad he picked me. There were a lot of women and children on the train who couldn't defend themselves. He picked me and instinct kicked in."

Lozito said he hopes Gelman faces up to his crime.

"I hope he hangs himself in jail," Lozito said. "I'm a big believer in karma."

‘Ninoy vowed to drop Sabah claim to get KL support vs Marcos’

Former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. had promised Malaysia in 1983 that the Philippines would drop its claim over Sabah in exchange for its support in the move to oust strongman Ferdinand Marcos, a former foreign affairs official revealed yesterday.

Hermes Dorado, former national territory division head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, said Aquino met with then Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Mahathir before he went back to the Philippines and was assassinated on Aug. 21, 1983.

Dorado said there were no official records of the supposed meeting between Aquino and Mahathir, but said he “became privy to this bit of intelligence” from former ambassador and retired general Rafael Ileto.

“General Ileto indirectly confirmed that Ninoy Aquino asked for help from Mahathir in exchange for dropping the Sabah claim when he gains power,” Dorado told a forum at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City.

Dorado said Ileto was the person assigned to monitor Aquino’s movement on his journey back to Manila.

“There was a commitment to help oust Marcos,” he added. “That is the reason why the government today is somehow reluctant to support the Sabah claim.”

“Our hands are tied today because the leadership up to this day is committed to drop the Philippine claim of Sabah,” he said.

According to Dorado, the clearest proof of Ninoy’s supposed pledge to Malaysia will be found in the 1987 Constitution, which was written during the presidency of his widow Corazon Aquino.

Dorado said the 1987 Constitution amended the first article of the 1973 Constitution and removed the phrase, “and all other territories belonging to the Philippines by historic right or legal title.”

The 1987 Constitution revised the definition of Philippine territory and “deleted Sabah as a historic claim backed up by the legal title pertaining to the sultanate of Sulu,” he added.

Dorado said Mrs. Aquino had no choice but to honor Ninoy’s commitment to Mahathir because she needed support from ASEAN nations to legitimize her ascendancy to the presidency through the people power revolution.

“Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir adamantly refused to attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila until President Cory made a firm commitment to amend Article 1 of the 1973 Constitution,” Dorado pointed out.

“Malaysian hard-ball diplomatic and guerrilla war maneuverings, backed by shrewd use of economic leverage, sourced from huge revenues from oil extracted in Sabah, were completed by 1987,” he added.

“They succeeded in forcing the Constitutional Commission to drop the Philippine Sabah claim, hands down.”

Dorado said the amended Baselines Law approved in March 2009 resulted in the exclusion of Sabah from the Philippine territory.

He said the amended law removed Section 2 of the 1968 law that included the phrase, “…the territory of Sabah, situated in North Borneo, over which the Republic of the Philippines has acquired dominion and sovereignty.”

“Removal of the specific reference to Sabah represented a disastrous outcome to the claims of the sultanate of Sulu,” Dorado said.

He claimed the results of the supposed “Ninoy-Mahathir pact” have destroyed all peaceful possibilities of pursuing the country’s claims.

Proprietary rights

Reacting to Dorado’s presentation, Princess Jacel Kiram – daughter of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III – maintained that Filipinos have proprietary rights in Sabah.

“We have so much wealth in Sabah na dapat tayo ang nakikinabang (we should be the ones benefitting),” Jacel said.

She said the lease agreement over North Borneo expired in 1978.

She accused the Aquino administration of protecting the interests of the Malaysian prime minister rather than the interest of the Filipino people.

“I would prefer to be another (nationality) rather than a Filipino citizen under our current set of leaders,” she said.

During the forum, Jacel confirmed the meeting between her uncle Sultan Bantilan Esmail Kiram II and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

“This is the first official talk from our side and from the side of the government,” she said, declining to provide additional information as she was not privy to what was discussed in the meeting.

Jacel said the development was a “good gesture” on the part of the government, and that its intention was for the benefit of the Filipino people.

Citing latest information from Sabah, Jacel said Agbimuddin Kiram and his people are safe but a lot of Filipinos have become victims of excessive force by Malaysian security forces.

Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936) is the 266thand current pope of the Catholic Church, elected on 13 March 2013. In that role, he is both the leader of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. From 1998 until his election as pope, he served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and was made a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.

Francis is the first Jesuit and the first from the Americas to be elected Pope. He is the first non-European pope since Syrian-born Pope Gregory III, who served for ten years (731–741).

Pope Francis

Early Life

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of the five children of Italian immigrants Mario Jose Bergoglio, a railway worker, and Regina Maria Sivori, a housewife. As a teenager Bergoglio had a lung removed as a result of an infection. He studied and received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires before he decided to pursue an ecclesiastical career. According to another reference, he graduated from a technical school as a chemical technician, and at the age of 21 decided to become a priest.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio
Ecclesiastical career

Jesuit
Bergoglio entered the Society of Jesus on 11 March 1958 and studied to become a priest at the Jesuit seminary in Villa Devoto. In 1960 Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel; in 1964 and 1965 he taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada, a high school in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, Bergoglio finished his theological studies and was ordained to the priesthood on 13 December 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Facultades de Filosofía y Teología de San Miguel (Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel),a seminary in San Miguel, Buenos Aires. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

The Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminary in San Miguel, and served in that capacity until 1986. He returned to Argentina to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.Bishop

Bergoglio was named Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992 and was ordained on 27 June 1992 as Titular Bishop of Auca, with His Eminence, Antonio Cardinal Quarracino, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, serving as principal consecrator.

Bergoglio succeeded Cardinal Quarracino as Archbishop of Buenos Aires on 28 February 1998 and was concurrently named ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Argentina, who had lacked their own prelate.

Vatican new pope

Positions on moral and political issues

Abortion, euthanasia, and contraception

Bergoglio has encouraged his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia, describing the pro-choice movement as a "culture of death".Francis opposed the free distribution of contraceptives in Argentina.

He also presented the 2007 "Aparecida Document" in Buenos Aires following its Papal approval, a Latin American document which among many points, linked doctrinal compliance on abortion, to worthiness to receive Holy Communion, describing abortion as a "death sentence"

Homosexuality

Bergoglio has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, including that "men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies must be accepted with respect and compassion."He opposes same-sex marriage, and strongly, but ultimately unsuccessfully, opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback." In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote:

"Let's not be naïve, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."

"Father of Lies" is a reference to the Devil from John 8:44.Bergoglio has also stated that adoption by same-sex couples is a form of discrimination against children.

Poverty and economic inequality

On 30 September 2009, Bergoglio spoke at a conference organized by the Argentina City Postgraduate School (EPOCA) at the Alvear Palace Hotel titled "Las deudas sociales de nuestro tiempo" where he quoted the 1992 "Documento de Santo Domingo" by the Latin American Episcopal Conference, saying "extreme poverty and unjust economic structures that cause great inequalities" are violations of human rights. He went on to describe social debt as "immoral, unjust and illegitimate".

During a 48-hour public servant strike in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio observed the differences between "poor people who are persecuted for demanding work, and rich people who are applauded for fleeing from justice." During a May 2010 speech in Argentina regarding the poor, he directed his message to the wealthy by saying: "You avoid taking into account the poor. We have no right to duck-down, to lower the arms carried by those in despair. We must reclaim the memory of our country who has a mother, recover the memory of our Mother".

Abuse of the vulnerable

In his 2007 presentation, Bergoglio denounced in strong terms, what he characterized as a cultural tolerance of child abuse and "discarding of the elderly".

Worthiness to receive the Eucharist and doctrinal compliance

In 2007, as Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio presented the final version of a joint statement of the bishops of Latin America – the "Aparecida Document" – upon its approval by Pope Benedict XVI. Among many points, the document links worthiness to receive the Eucharist, to compliance and acceptance of Church teaching against the "abominable crimes" of abortion and euthanasia:"We hope that legislators, heads of government, and health professionals, conscious of the dignity of human life and of the rootedness of the family in our peoples, will defend and protect it from the abominable crimes of abortion and euthanasia; that is their responsibility ... We should commit ourselves to 'eucharistic coherence', that is, we should be conscious that people cannot receive Holy Communion and at the same time act or speak against the commandments, in particular when abortion, euthanasia, and other serious crimes against life and family are facilitated. This responsibility applies particularly to legislators, governors, and health professionals."

Statements made during his presentation which referred to a topical Argentinian abortion case were opposed by that country's government, who stated that "the diagnosis of the Church in relation to social problems in Argentina is correct, but to mix that with abortion and euthanasia, is at least a clear example of ideological malfeasance.

The Near-Death Experience and the Silver Cord

$

0
The silver cord has been described as being smooth, very long, very bright, like an elastic cable made of light, about an inch wide, sparkling like a tinsel on a Christmas tree, and attached to one of several possible locations on the physical body.

During the dying process, as the spirit body leaves the physical body and moves farther away it, the silver cord becomes thinner as it is stretched to its limit and becomes severed. When this occurs, the spirit body is released from being attached to the physical body. At this point, it becomes impossible for the spirit body to ever return to the physical body. For this reason, we can define "irreversible death" as that point when the silver cord becomes stretched to its limit and severed. This is the so-called "point of no return." This boundary point may also be accompanied by the appearance of a particular landmark representing a boundary such as a river, a wall, a fence, or a canyon. Once this barrier is crossed, the near-death experience becomes an irreversible death experience.

Many experiencers have felt the pull of the silver cord when it is stretched near its limit. They often describe the experience as being instantly retracted to their physical body - like stretching a rubber band to near its limit and then releasing one end of it.

This silver cord is our spirit body's "lifeline" to our physical body in the same way that our umbilical cord is our "lifeline" to our mother's body during the birth process.

During the death process, should the physical body be subjected to a violent death, such as in a severe car accident, the silver cord is severed before the impact preventing the pain that is experienced by the physical body from being felt by the spirit body.

The existence of the silver cord is even mentioned in the Bible:

"Remember him - before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, or the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it." (Ecclesiastes 12:6 - 7)

One Man Lives Alone In Fukushima Dead Zone Town To Take Care of His Animals

They call him Radioactive Man, the Japanese farmer who refused to leave his home town despite it being less than six miles away from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Defiant Naoto Matsumura, 53, is the only remaining inhabitant of the town of Tomioka which was a thriving community of 16,000 people before the tsunami hit two years ago.

The rice farmer disobeyed government orders to leave and has stayed on to feed the town's animals including his own 50 cows and two ostriches.

Mr Matsumura is permanently exposed to up to 17 times the level of radiation that is considered safe.

He put his health at further risk by eating food that had also been exposed to radiation, although he is now surviving on relief supplies delivered from outside and water that has been checked for radiation.

When researchers at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency conducted tests, Mr Matsumura was found to have the highest level of radiation in anyone they had tested.

He told Vice magazine: 'When I went down and let them look me over, they told me I was the "champion".
'But they also told me that I wouldn’t get sick for 30 or 40 years. I’ll most likely be dead by then anyway, so I couldn’t care less.'

'They couldn’t stand the wait, so they’d all gather around barking up a storm as soon as they heard my truck. Everywhere I went there was always barking. Like, ‘we’re thirsty’ or, ‘we don’t have any food.’ So I just kept making the rounds.'

Among the animals he rescued was a dog that had been trapped inside a cattle barn for a year and a half.
It had only survived by eating the flesh of cattle that had starved to death. When Mr Matsumura rescued it in the summer of 2012 most of its fur had fallen out.

But thanks to Mr Matsumura's loving care it has made a remarkable recovery and most of its fur has now grown back.

Mr Matsumura named him Kiseki, which means 'miracle' in English.

Without any humans about many of the town's dogs and cats havegone feral and now live in the forest.

Sadly hundreds of head of cattle were left to starve to death inside a nearby barn and despite Mr Matsumura's efforts many of the survivors are severely undernourished.

Nevertheless he has pledged to stay on as long and care for them for as long as he can.

He said: 'I was born and raised in this town,' he told us. 'When I die, it’s going to be in Tomioka.'

The Bloody Ashura Rite

The Day of Ashura is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Mourning of Muharram.

The Bloody Ashura Rite

It is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH. According to Sunni Muslim tradition, Ibn Abbas narrates that Muhammad came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora’. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moosa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.

In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Pakistan, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday.

Top 10 Biggest Lies Ever Told In History

$
0
0
History teaches us so many valuable lessons. However, the most important one is that deceit has helped people acheive goals that they wouldnt have otherwise. People have manipulated societies with their lies and deceits resulting in earning power, fame and money at the price of loss of lives.
What follows is a mere summary of some of the biggest lies told in history whose impact far exceeds than what one might have imagined. These lies are diverse in nature and have affected not just politics but science and art too.

10. The Trojan Horse

Most of us have seen ‘Troy’. Greeks defeated Trojans via a scheme that was brilliant and quite effective. A peace offering was made to Trojans in the form of a gigantic wooden horse. Trojans were unaware of the fact that wooden horse’s belly was hollow and had Greek soldiers within it. The Greeks infiltrated fortified city under the disguise of peace offering and later on became victorious. The victory came as a relief for greeks since the war had been going on for ten long years. This incident has a paramount importance in history and serves as an example to be wary of enemies bearing gifts.

9. Han van Meegeren’s Vermeer Forgeries
Han van Meegeren, in the early 20th century exploited the religious scholars by capitalizing on the controversy regarding  paintings of Biblical scenes. The topic of discussion was the question that whether Vermeer really painted a certain series of paintings that portrayed biblical scenes. Han van Meegeren was not appreciated enough and this became the driving factor for him and he decided to express his skills by tricking the art community. Van Meegeren created fake painting of ‘The Disciples at Emmaus’. Skillful, as he was, he managed to pull it off and the painting was certified to be authentic. The talented artist went on to make a number of these paintings and became quite famous indeed. This lie was unveiled when later on Han van Meegeren was charged with selling a ‘National Treasure’ to Nazis and had to paint another one in presence of authorities to prove that he has been making fakes all this time and no National Treasure had been lost.

8.Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi Scheme

Ever heard of Ponzi scheme? Simply put; you keep a fraction of money investors invest in your company and instead of investing it, you pay off earlier investors via the new funds. Its an ingenious scheme that can work for sometime as long as you keep getting more and more new investors. This is where Mr. Bernie Madoff comes in. He managed to con about $50 billion from investors by using this Ponzi scheme. You’d be surprised to know that he managed to keep up this lie for more than a decade. Invented by Charles Ponzi in the early 20th century, the genius Bernie took it to a new level. The next piece of information might come as a shock; Mr. Bernie Madoff was a former chairman of NASDAQ and was a respected expert of the financial field. Maybe that is the reason why he was able to get so many investors and keep this scam up for years!

7. Anna Anderson, Alias Anastasia

Russian Revolution resulted in extinction of Royal family in Russia. In 1918 the execution of royal Romanov family was carried out resulting in the killing of Czar Nicholas II along with his wife and children. The whole practice was carried out to prevent any uprising later on via public support. As with such cases, soon there was news of some survivors who had survived this massacre. Among many cases that surfaced, Anna Anderson was the most peculiar one. She gained quite a fame due to the fact that she did resemble one of the daughters that were killed; Princess Anastasia and because she had a remarkable knowledge of family and life at court. Most of the relatives did not believe this miraculous survivor’s story. After seven years of surfacing of Miss Anna, an old roommate of Anna confirmed that her real name is Franziska Schanzkowska. Although she lost her case to earn the royal inheritance, our ‘Princess Anastasia’ remained faithful to her story until she passed away in 1984. Investigations kept going and finally in 2009 experts confirmed that no one escaped the massacre in 1918.

6.Titus Oates and the Plot to Kill Charles II

Next up we have Titus Oates. The man was known for his deceptive nature and had been expelled from a number of schools in England. His biggest achievement is the panic he created by spreading the lie that Catholics planned to murder King Charles II and replace him with his Catholic brother James. This resulted in execution of almost 35 people and fueled anti-Catholic feelings. Mr. Titus Oates even faked his conversion and gained valuable information which he later on used to bring havoc. He got free during the Glorious revolution in 1688.

5. Piltdown Man
The evolution of humans has been a hot topic for quite some time. In 1910, Archaeologist Charles Dawson unearthed one of the most famous hoaxes in history. He discovered the Piltdown man in Sussex, England. This famous ‘discovery’ was brought to an experienced paleontologist Arthur Smith Woodward who kept persuading people of its authenticity till he passed away. Later on, however, the story was unveiled and it was known as a fact that the Piltdown man was a hoax and it didn’t fit anywhere in human evolution. In fact, the skull found was only 600 years old and had been tampered with by someone who had knowledge of such work. Evidences later on pointed towards a museum volunteer by the name of Martin A.C. to be the artist of this hoax. Still, the science world was definitely made a fool by this Piltdown man discovery.

4. The Dreyfus Affair

This particular scandal resulted in a 12 year controversy, political reforms, riots and what not! A Jewish officer in French army was accused of treachery; selling military secrets to Germans in the late 19th century. Alfred Dreyfus, after his trial was sentenced to life imprisonment. Later on, suspicions arose indicating that he had been framed. Upon suppression of these rumors a novelist by the name of Emile Zola accused the army of covering up. The scandal resulted in division of folks into Dreyfusards and Anti-Dreyfusards. The battle of principles raged on for 12 years. Finally Maj. Hubert Joseph Henry committed suicide after accepting that he was the culprit and the case was re-opened only to find out that the Jewish officer was guilty. A civilian court, later on, set him free and he carried on with his Military career.

3. Clinton/Lewinsky Affair

Bill Clinton, The President of United States, publicly denied the allegations of having an affair with a White House Intern. However, his problems had just started. Bill was sued for sexual harassment and lawyers set out to uncover the truth. They found Linda Tripp and guess who used to confide in Linda? Monica Lewinsky, the same lady that Bill had denied of having any affair. Not just denied, but denied under oath. Linda Tripp had recorded calls of Monica which were related to her affair with Bill Clinton. This scandal roared its way into the media and became quite famous. Prosecutor Kenneth Starr made Bill Clinton admit to the relationship. Senate acquitted him of charges and Bill maintained quite a high approval rating.

2. Watergate

President Richard Nixon in front almost four hundred Associated Press editors gave his famous line; ‘I am not a crook’. The lie came back to him later on and resulted in Nixon giving his resignation and ultimately letting Jimmy Carter become the President. The matter was pertaining 5 men who broke into the Watergate Hotel. It was hypothesized that the burglars were ordered to wiretap the phones there. The investigation soon turned into a question whether Mr. President knew, ordered or tried covering up this act. Later, it was revealed that White House conversations had been recorded and Nixon refused to give up his tapes until Supreme Court ordered him to do so. This new evidence implicated Nixon in the covering up of this particular act. America’s politics were scarred badly because of this.

1. The Big Lie: Nazi Propaganda

Adolf Hitler came up with the ‘Final solution’ which was to simply execute all Jews on the face of planet Earth. He convinced people of Germany that Jews were their enemies by spreading lies about Jews. He blamed Jews for all problems of the German nation and even came up with the lie about ritual killing of Christian children by Jews. This resulted in the creation of ‘The Big Lie’. Supposedly, People believe what they are told again and again and also if a lie is big enough, not many will reject it. Infact, the bigger the lie the higher is the chance of people accepting it. This theory can prove helpful if you are interested in uncovering more lies that have been told throughout the history.

A Retired Heart Surgeon Saved A Police Officer Three Minutes from Death

Samad  Tadjkarimi, A hero doctor

A knifeman who tried to kill two police officers while on licence from prison was jailed for life. John Onyenaychi, described as one of Britain’s most dangerous men, slashed PC Paul Madden’s throat with a Stanley knife in front of terrified commuters near a bus stop.

The maniac lashed out at other officers and shouted: ‘Let me finish him off.’

PC Madden, 23, collapsed with wounds to his neck, throat and face and would have died within three minutes through blood loss.

But he was spotted by Samad  Tadjkarimi, 65, a retired heart surgeon who applied pressure to his neck to keep him alive long enough to receive emergency surgery.

Mr Tadjkarimi, who was doing his Christmas shopping in the area, had retired three weeks earlier. He said: ‘It’s very humbling that my intervention perhaps contributed to the outcome of possibly saving his life – a very brave young officer.

‘It’s my duty. I’m sure anyone in my profession would do the same.’

During his rampage in Ealing, west London, Onyenaychi stabbed Police Community Support Officer Piotr Dolata twice in the head as he tried to help. Mr Dolata, 27, needed 12 stitches.

PC Madden was also attacked and another PCSO, Steven Constable, was slashed twice but escaped serious injury because the thickness of his high-visibility jacket saved him.

Onyenaychi, of Stratford, east London, was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, robbery and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. Judge Peter Beaumont, the Recorder of London, gave him two life sentences and ordered him to serve a minimum of 25 years after a nine-day trial at the Old Bailey.

Outside court Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane said:  ‘He is one of the most dangerous men in Britain.’

Onyenaychi, who has committed violent offences since the age of  12, was out on licence from a two-year prison sentence for causing death by dangerous driving while high on drugs.

The attack on the three officers last December was the culmination of a six-day ‘crime spree of lethal and extreme violence’, said Brian Altman QC, prosecuting.

He told the jury that 6ft 2in Onyenaychi ‘is a highly dangerous individual who thinks nothing of carrying a knife on him, a tool of his trade, and uses it as a lethal weapon when he wishes to do so’.

Mr Altman said Onyenaychi became agitated when challenged about his ticket on a bus in Ealing.

PCSOs recognised him by a distinguishing mark under his right eye as a man wanted for a previous attack.

When PC Madden arrived, he thought Onyenaychi might be armed and tried to arrest him.

‘Without warning, the defendant ripped his hands from his pockets and moved towards the policeman,’ said Mr Altman.

After an initial attack, he pulled the officer ‘close in and, with force, cut him across the throat’. He stabbed PC Madden three or four times before colleagues were able to intervene.

Four days earlier, Onyenaychi stabbed a man five times, causing serious wounds, at a minicab office in Brentford, west London, after a failed robbery.

And two days before that, he stole a laptop computer from a man in Fulham, west London, after threatening him with a knife.

Doctors warn public not to touch ‘Soup No. 7’ made from fetus

The Department of Health (DOH) has warned people on the new tablet pills called “soup number 7″ from China for it contains stem cell which is taken from aborted fetus. ”Soup number 7″ is contained in a tablet-like medicine which is dissolved with hot water to become a soup. The warning came after reports said that the “soup” is already in the Philippines, and is being sold illegally.

The stem cell from aborted fetus is said to be an aphrodisiac, which, when absorbed by the body, increases and improves one’s libido, or sex drive. Stem cell therapy is becoming popular in the country as a cure for degenerative diseases or for cosmetics purposes. Stem cells are suppose to be injected by doctors in their patient’s bodies and are not in a form of pills, lotions, soaps etc. Clinics should be accredited first by the Department of Health (DOH) before they could offer stem cell therapies to their patients.

Before “soup number 7,” there was a “soup number 5″ which some consumers swear by as an effective aphrodisiac. Its key ingredient is bull testicle.

Massachusetts Crime Lab Chemist Falsified Evidence in More Than 30,000 Cases

Annie Dhookan (right), a former Massachusetts crime lab chemist, is accused of falsifying evidence in more than 30,000 cases. The state's criminal justice system is now reeling as former defendants are challenging their convictions and hundreds have already been released.

How many innocent lives may have been destroyed by one person's actions?

This scandal in a Massachusetts crime lab continues to reverberate throughout the state's legal system. Several months ago, Annie Dookhan, a former chemist in a state crime lab, told police that she messed up big time. Dookhan now stands accused of falsifying test results in as many as 34,000 cases.

As a result, lawyers, prosecutors and judges used to operating in a world of "beyond a reasonable doubt" now have nothing but doubt.

Already, hundreds of convicts and defendants have been released because of the scandal. Now, the state's highest court may weigh in on how these cases should be handled.

"I don't think anyone ever perceived that one person was capable of causing this much chaos," says Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrisey, one of many DAs now digging through old drug cases, trying to sort out how many should now be considered tainted.

"You can see the entire walls full of boxes," Morrissey says, gesturing at dusty files piled six feet high in a conference room near his office. "In one of these cardboard boxes, there could be hundreds of cases ... in each box."

The cases represent nearly a decade's worth of work that could take years and tens of millions of dollars to review.

For Prosecutors, 'Unsettling And Maddening'

In Massachusetts, special courts have already heard hundreds of cases of convicts and defendants arguing they were denied due process. Their evidence, they argue, was handled — or mishandled — by Annie Dookhan.

In a recent hearing, public defender Julieann Hernon is arguing for release of a man charged with selling cocaine and heroin in a school-zone to an undercover officer. Hernon recites a list of alleged misconduct by Dookhan.

"It was, we now know, mistesting evidence, drylabbing evidence, saying she had conducted tests when she had not, deliberately tainting drugs," she says.

Hernon's client had pleaded guilty, but now, Hernon says, he should be allowed to take it back.

"Certainly, I think, we have to presume a taint here when Annie Dookhan was the chemist in the case," Hernon tells the judge.

The whole dynamic in court has now flipped in Massachusetts. Defendants tend to smile while prosecutors watch their cases crumble. Today, Norfolk County Assistant District Attorney Tom Finigan tells the court that the Commonwealth will not oppose Hernon's motion.

"It's unsettling and maddening, because you're now going to have a lot of people get released to the street prematurely," says Middlesex County District attorney Gerry Leone, one of many hoping the state supreme court will curb the releases.

While some defendants could still be on the hook for gun or assault charges, for example, he says most drug cases where Dookhan was the primary chemist will be impossible to re-prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

But Leone says it's unclear where to draw the line. Some offenders, he says, are just trying to jump on the bandwagon, arguing that every test from that lab should be considered tainted.

"If someone's in jail, they're doing downtime," Leone says. "So there's no reason to try to file something that gets you back before the court."

In another recent case, defense attorney William Sullivan successfully argued to withdraw a client's guilty plea in a case where Dookhan was a secondary chemist.

"This is a lab that was pretty much wholly and fully contaminated by Ms. Annie Dookhan," Sullivan told the judge. "She had full access to everyone's drugs."

While the judge decided in his client's favor, Sullivan is quick to add that clients like his also have plenty of reason to be bitter.

"The tragedy is that he's already did four years on this," Sullivan says. "I mean, that is disturbing in itself."

Other defendants have lost jobs, driver's licenses, kids and marriages, and many have been deported. And in federal court, many defendants received stiffer sentences, because of prior state convictions based on evidence from Annie Dookhan.

With Hundreds Now Free, Police On High Alert

Defense attorneys say it's taking too long to handle these cases individually. They want the state's highest court to order that Dookhan cases should be presumed to be tainted and automatically put on hold.

It may look like defendants are getting a "get out of jail free" card, Sullivan says, but the focus must be on whether they got a fair trial.

"I think we put on blinders when we're doing these cases," Sullivan says. "You try to do the right thing for your client to make sure that they get proper representation. And if that means it gets them off, it gets them off."

With hundreds of former defendants already off and out on city streets, police remain on high alert.

"These people are not first time offenders or small time drug dealers," says Boston police sergeant James Machado. "I know there will be consequence[s] of this. And unfortunately, innocent people will be killed."

Already, about 20 of those released have been re-arrested for new crimes. Boston police commissioner Edward Davis says Boston hasn't seen the surge in violence that some feared, but he — and his officers — worry it's yet to come.

"They shake their heads. You know, they're disgusted by what's happened," Davis says. "We have to start from zero again."

Davis says he's been sending an officer to meet with each defendant or convict just before release to offer services like job training — and to issue a warning.

"We tell them, 'Listen, we know what you were doing before and we're watching you. And if you go back into the life, that Dookhan's not there anymore. So when you go [back] in on this charge, it's gonna stick,'" Davis says.

Annie Dookhan is currently facing charges of her own: 27 counts of perjury, tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.

At the same time, civil suits are also starting to pile up, as those accused of crimes based on Dookhan's evidence now accuse Dookhan of violating their right to a fair trial.

Venezuela to probe Chavez cancer death conspiracy

Venezuela is to formally investigate suspicions late President Hugo Chavez’s was afflicted with cancer after being poisoned by foreign enemies, the government said.

Acting President Nicolas Maduro vowed to set up an inquiry into the allegation, which was first leveled by Chavez after being diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Foreign scientists will also be invited to join a government commission to investigate the claim.
hugo chavez dead body

“We will seek the truth,” Reuters cites Maduro as telling regional TV network Telesur late on Monday. “We have the intuition that our commander, Chavez, was poisoned by dark forces that wanted him out of the way.”

Maduro said it was too early to determine the exact root of the cancer which was discovered in Chavez’s pelvic region in June 2011, but charged that the United States had laboratories which were experienced in manufacturing diseases.

“He had a cancer that broke all norms,” the agency cites Maduro as saying. “Everything seems to indicate that they affected his health using the most advanced techniques … He had that intuition from the beginning.”

Chavez reportedly underwent four surgeries in Cuba, before dying of respiratory failure after the cancer metastasized in in his lungs.

Maduro compared the conspiracy surrounding Chavez’s death to allegations that Israeli agents poisoned Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to death in 2004.

In December 2011, Chavez speculated that the United States could be infecting the regions leaders with cancer after Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

“I don’t want to make any reckless accusations,” Chavez said before asking:

“Would it be strange if [the United States] had developed a technology to induce cancer, and for no one to know it?” Maduro repeated the accusation last week on the eve of Chavez’s death.

“Behind all of [the plots] are the enemies of the fatherland,” he said on state television before announcing the expulsion of two US Air Force officials for spying on the military and plotting to destabilize the country.

hugo chavez funeral

Venezuela’s opposition has lambasted the claim as another Chavez-style conspiracy theory intended to distract people from real issues gripping the country in the run up to the snap presidential election called for April 14.

As Tuesday marked the last day of official mourning for Chavez, ceremonies are likely to continue, fueling claims by the opposition that the government is exploiting Chavez’s death to hold onto power.

While launching his candidacy on Monday, Maduro began his speech with a recording of Chavez singing the national anthem, sending many of his supporters into tears.

The pro-business state governor Henrique Capriles, who is running for the opposition’s Democratic Unity coalition, was quick to remind both his supporters and detractors that the charismatic socialist reformer Chavez was not his opponent.

“[Maduro] is not Chávez and you all know it,” The Christian Science Monitor quotes him as saying while announcing his candidacy on Sunday.

“President Chávez is no longer here.” Maduro, a former bus driver and Chavez’s handpicked successor, has attempted to deflect criticism that he lacks the former president’s rhetorical flair by painting himself as a working class hero.

“I’m a man of the street. … I’m not Chávez,” he said Sunday.

“I’m interim president, commander of the armed forces and presidential candidate because this is what Chávez decided and I’m following his orders.” Polls taken before Chavez’s death gave Maduro a 10 point lead over Capriles, who lost to Chavez in last October’s presidential poll.

You can’t own a Federal Reserve dollar, you can only borrow one from the Feds, and the tax payers pay interest on it while it’s in your pocket. Kennedy wanted to change that injustice and set Americans free of the mounting debt for interest payable to the Federal Reserve, which of course you know is not federal at all, it’s a private company owned by foreign powers.
This was why it is thought that Kennedy was killed, it was a hit by the powers-that-be that were close to the Federal Reserve, people who gained from the existence of the Federal Reserve dollar, who did not want a new dollar managed by a Catholic President. The stories of Cuban dissidents and so forth, were red herrings, as was the Lee Harvey Oswald myth. President Lyndon Johnson, who seceded from Kennedy, quietly dropped the idea of the new American dollar. It would take a brave man or woman to bring up the plan once more. The assassination must have created a profound fear of the Feds.
