Who is Lucifer? 5 Descriptions of Satan Before He'd Become the Devil

Most, Christians don't know who the Devil was in his youth, before Lucifer became this red, horned, goofy monster from hell who wields a trident and whisper temptations into people's ear in competition with an angel. These believers are not to blame, because the tradition that holds the story of Satan is one that's orally transmitted and only rarely mentioned in the Bible. The tale of this dashing young prince is lavishly told in the Qur'an.

Lucifer

1 Lucifer a Star

And I mean that literally. Not a Hollywood celebrity, you ninny; the devil was a burning ball of fire — no, wait, not even that literal. Scientific astronomy had barely been born during that era, and the ancient people had no idea that stars are just that — balls of fire. The ancients thought stars were living, breathing bipeds like you and me, only bright and floating in the sky at night, just as you see in the Chronicles of Narnia. Remember Caspian's bride in the Voyage of the Dawn Treader? Yeah.

While the Canaanites thought they were gods, the Israelites thought stars were angels. Satan was one of them. And the Devil was a special kind of star: Satan was the Morning Star, which translates as Lucifer in Latin, and the god Phosphorus or Eosphorus in Greek. The original Hebrew word was Hêlēl. Helel in Canaanite mythology was a god who tried to dethrone the supreme god El.

How you have fallen from heaven, Morning Star, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! Isaiah 14:12.

Isaiah was of course not entirely correct in that Bible passage on account that the Morning Star he was ranting about was not exactly a star, but a planet — the planet Venus. Lucifer, according to Isaiah, was too haughty and ambitious to want to be at the most high, and in the end got cast down to earth. If you know the orbit of Venus, which the ancients didn't at the time, naturally you wouldn't expect Lucifer to rise to the zenith like the stars sailing across the heavens. Lucifer would simply appear as if the "star" is rising to the highest, but never quite does.

2 Lucifer an Angel

In Judeo-Christian tradition, God created two races: angels and humans. Angels are different from human beings in that, whereas humans were created out of earth, God creates angels out of light.

Lucifer prides himself of this: that he was created out of light, not of dirt, like Adam.

Lucifer has a brother in Greek mythology: Hesperus, the Evening Star, who is one and the same as the Morning Star really, as the planet Venus appears both in the morning and the evening.

3 Lucifer a Hottie

You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. … You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created …, Ezekiel 28: 12, 15

Yep, that's right. Lucifer was one beautiful angel. He was "perfect in beauty." So pretty that he became haughty because of it. He believed himself more beautiful than Adam: a vanity that will later lead to his fall (which again we shall talk about in another article).

Lucifer was beautiful even according to the Qur'an. Although the Muslims don't think Lucifer was an angel.

4 Lucifer a Jinni

To add to the lot of humans and angels, the jinn are an entirely separate race that God created. And Lucifer was a jinni according to the Qur'an. Being a jinni, the Devil was not made out of light like the angels, but out of smoke-free fire. Lucifer's name in Islam is Iblis.

5 Lucifer a Prince
The whole world lies in the power of the evil one, 1 John 5:19.
Whether an angel or a jinni, what is certain is that Lucifer was a prince. In Jewish literature, Lucifer is known to have been an archangel, to whom was assigned an entire legion of angels, and who took charge over the earth.

It is believed that until now the world is under the rule of Lucifer. That's how Satan offered the world to Jesus on a very high mountain (Matthew 4:8-9): the Devil owns the world. That's also why, according to Christianity and Judaism, the world needs redemption: The world needs to be redeemed from Satan's ownership and into God's glory.
