Soft drink giant Pepsi will add aspartame again to the light variations of cola. Associated Press reports that the artificial sweetener is going to be used in some drinks in September.
In some countries the aspartame sweetener is known as it could cause cancer. The artificial sweetener has a negative image, so the sales of diet drinks have declined dramatically.
Reverse
In August last year Pepsi decided to replace aspartame with sucralose, another artificial sweetener. Consumers found the new flavor but less tasty, and sales of light variations plummeted. The soft drink giant has now decided to reverse the decision.
Aspartame has been linked to cancer in laboratory mice, but the US Food Authority FDA says that more than 100 studies that show that the sweetener is safe. Coca-Cola is trying to convince consumers with an ad campaign that the sweetener is not be harmful to health.
